'I'm angry and scared': Trump-backing CEO whines that his proposed tariffs will 'cripple my company'

Even though Buchzeiger backed Trump in 2016 and “supports” his “campaign to level U.S. trade imbalances,” she didn’t expect him to enact anything like what he has proposed.

“I am… angry, frustrated and a little scared, because the unintended consequences of the president’s $50 billion tariffs on China would cripple my business in Auburn Hills and strip my 50 employees of their good-paying jobs,” she writes. “This is crazy.”

She then goes on to explain how her company’s supply chain does have some jobs in Asia — but she says those jobs also pave the way for other jobs here in the United States. Trump’s tariffs threaten to disrupt her whole supply chain, she says, which also puts her American employees’ jobs at risk.

Anyone who had bothered to do a few Google searches in 2016 would have found out about Trump’s frauds (e.g., Trump University), his poor management that drove six businesses into bankruptcy, the fines for his casino not following banking rules (hard to do that when you’re laundering money for the Russians), the Polish workers he hired to work on Trump Tower and then refused to give them all their pay because they could do nothing as they were in the country illegally, the numerous lawsuits small business owners had to file to get paid for work completed, his so-called charity that used donations to buy things like a full-sized portrait of Trump as well as paying business expenses, his constant lies so that even his own lawyers attended meetings in pairs so they could substiantiate what he said, and perhaps worst of all his long-time association with Roy Cohn, his disbarred lawyer with his bag of Mafia-like dirty tricks. All this should have eliminated him from even being the GOP candidate, much less being elected. Then add his hateful rhetoric about Mexicans and Muslims, as well as his overt calls for police to use more force to hurt people when arresting them, and his incitement of violence among his supporters, and you have a known entity. If people are surprised, it means they didn’t bother doing any research whatsoever prior to voting for literally what historians will say has been the worst president in the history of the U.S.

Mon May 14, 2018, 10:13 AM
May 2018

One of the reasons for the strong Trump economy: More workers in the U.S. make products that are made from steel than make steel itself. Billions of dollars are pumped into the American economy by the unique and ingenious ways U.S. companies use steel and aluminum components — like we do at Lucerne.

I wonder: Does President Trump know that his tariff on imported components threatens almost every manufacturing job in Michigan?

Does he know that my little company in my little corner of Michigan would lose 90 percent of its business overnight? Does he understand that a 25 percent tax on the components Lucerne uses would evaporate my profit margins? That it would shut us down?

I don't think he does. Because I know my president cares — and I've got to believe he will change his mind, grant sensible exclusions, and help companies like Lucerne make America great again.

Hoping he'll only screw other people. My brain hurts from reading her impeccable logic.

Trump showed throughout his campaign that he was embarrassingly clueless on all the issues, including trade. Mary, the daughter of a GM executive, had factory jobs growing up and was expected to work. Her father started Lucerne in 1993 and Mary went to work there. It was her idea to move manufacturing to China.

“We were barreling along, a million or two a shot [per year],” she said. “Now we’re about $32 million in sales.”

She took over operations in 2006 and bought out her father in 2015. “It’s all mine now,” she said.
