Nothing says 'peace' like 58 dead Palestinians

By Dana Milbank Columnist May 14 at 8:18 PM

Here’s a split-screen for our times: While Israeli troops were killing dozens of Palestinian protesters in Gaza on Monday, Trump administration representatives were 50 miles away in Jerusalem, celebrating with Israeli officials the opening of the U.S. Embassy there and praising their mutual devotion to peace.

“Moving the U.S. embassy,” Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan declared, is “a step toward advancing peace.”

President Trump himself, in a video message, pledged his commitment to a “lasting peace agreement.”

His son-in-law, Jared Kushner, said “peace is within reach.”

And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared it “a great day for peace.”

Because nothing says “peace” like 58 Palestinians killed, 2,700 wounded, renewed hostilities between Iran and Israel, the entire region aflame and U.S. allies reeling.

As soon as Cadet Bone Spurs and chicken hawk Bolton attack Iran, the MIC will really be overjoyed.

After all their kids won't be fighting and dying to make oil companies richer.

I guess that means that peace will only occur when all of those who are oppressed die. Classic victim-blaming.

along with Bibi. Theirs is a symbiotic relationship - they both need each to stay in power.

Not as long as the issues remain. Expecting that to happen just doesn't recognize reality.

Hamas' main "issue" is the mere existence of Israel.

That being said, Hamas could certainly improve the lot of Gaza by not diverting aid funds for tunnels and weapons. Just a thought.

Not until Palestinians and Israelis figure out how to coexist. Both have legitimate claims on that area. Religion! Feh!

further oppression of the Palestinians.

You can have a great deal of "peace" when a whole people is prevented from having anything close to autonomy or self-determination.

And then Israel under Netanyahu gets upset when it gets criticized, cries foul, claims victimhood.

Makes me crazy (crazy angry).

The USA has lost its moral bearing. I thought the Bush years were bad but we are in a totally different situation now. Everyday we lose a little more of that which made us a once proud and noble country. It won’t be long before we are just another Turkey or Russia led by a strongman and a ruling class. If Dems don’t win the midterms I fear the republic will be lost. I hate the republicans for what the have done and haven’t done. I hope those people who support Trump nothing but ill-will and sincerely wish they lose their healthcare, jobs and suffer terrible misery under the weight of their President’s policies.

he thinks he can side with Israel instead of being an honest broker and bully Palestine into submission to bring about peace. That will not happen those people will be eradicated before it does.
