3. State legislature results
Wed May 16, 2018, 12:52 AM
May 2018

There are 203 state house reps, too many to list, but here are some of the more interesting results on the Dem side:

Dan Smith defeated Honora Rockar for the right to oust the odious Darryl Metcalfe.
Jake Wheatley squeaked by his main opponent 48-42
Sara Innamorato, Democratic Socialist, upset current state rep Dom Costa 64-36
Emily Skopov faces off against current state house majority leader Mike Turzai
Summer Lee, Democratic Socialist, upset current state rep Paul Costa, 68-32

was successful for the Dem candidate. It's possible Dems wrote in the name of the incumbent R or of the 525 write-in votes, more than 225 were for the incumbent R, but I think that's not very likely.

7. Both Costas lose
Wed May 16, 2018, 12:57 AM

That's the big story in the state house. The Costas were more conservative Dems and both were ousted by Democratic Socialists.

Fetterman also has a socialist bent and supported Sanders in the 2016 Dem primary.

11. State senate

May 2018

Not too much interesting on the state senate side.

Ezra Nanes will take on Jake Corman, current senate majority leader. This is a State College/Penn State centered district, so Corman isn't a shoo-in for re-election.

Craig James actually got more D primary votes than incumbent senator Camera Barlotta got R primary votes. That's surprising to me. It happened to incumbent senators Stewart Greenleaf and Pat Browne, too.

And, Corman still has his fathers name.

Similar to the congressional district, State College does not make up near enough of the critical mass in the district to swing it. It can't even get it's candidates out of the primary for the congressional district.

LOTS of automatic R votes outside of Centre Region in his back pocket.

12. Special elections
Wed May 16, 2018, 01:13 AM
May 2018

In the 3 special elections:

HD-68: Carrie Heath lost to R Clint Owlett. A whopping 400 people voted. I know not many people live in the 3 counties comprising this HD, but still...

HD-178: Helen Tai (D) defeated Wendy Thomas (R)

HD-48: Tim O'Neal (R) bests Clark Alexander (D) 55-44

17. Yes, but

the GOP previously held all 3 seats, so Dems flipped the Bucks County-based 178th.

The other districts were in GOP friendly turf where a Dem win would've been a major upset.

13. Maybe a harbinger

My area has increasingly been voting republican, but tonight, more Dems turned out to vote than Rs. It wasn't a lot more, but where R voters generally turn out well, I take it as a good sign. The other thing is Dems didn't have an contested races except for lt gov and the Rs had contested races for gov, lt gov and US senate.
