Tillerson Decries Alternative Realities, Leaders Who Conceal the Truth in Loaded Commencement Speechby Josh Feldman | 1:26 pm, May 16th, 2018
The latest commencement speaker to make veiled references warning of threats to established norms of American society is Rex Tillerson?
Tillerson delivered the Virginia Military Institute commencement today and made some interesting remarks about leadership and the truth, less than two months after leaving the Trump White House. The former Secretary of State spoke of global challenges before expressing his concern about the state of our American democracy, particularly a growing crisis of ethics and integrity.
He went on to emphasize the importance of the truth:
A responsibility of every American citizen to each other is to preserve and protect our freedom by recognizing what truth is and is not, what a fact is and is not, and begin by holding ourselves accountable to truthfulness and demand our pursuit of Americas future be fact-basednot based on wishful thinking, not hoped-for outcomes made in shallow promisesbut with a clear-eyed view of the facts as they are, and guided by the truth that will set us free to seek solutions to our most daunting challenges.
When we as people, a free people, go wobbly on the truth, Tillerson added, even on what may seem the most trivial of matters, we go wobbly on America.

(29,703 posts)He knew it was so terrible that he sued to keep it away from his property. He lied for 40-50 years about climate change; he is a servant of the devil and this is too little too late.

(10,749 posts)That's all well and good. But he chose to work for a regime that is grounded in alternative realities and didn't speak up until he was out. He admitted that he didn't know wtf he was doing, and yet he accepted the appointment and the Senate's confirmation of that appointment. Where are his fucking ethics and principles?
And while his comments may be welcome now, he's still too cowardly to be more pointed that he was in that speech. The man was the CEO of one of the largest and most powerful companies in the world, and all we get is mealy-mouthed crap? Would he have been mealy mouthed to his employees? Would he have accepted mealy-mouthed BS from those employees? Sorry, Rex, but this isn't enough. You have the street and business creds to make a difference. But you have chosen not to. That makes you a coward and keeps you squarely aligned with the current regime and its acolytes and sycophants. Nice try, though.

Making it into the tired old fake equivalency. Too much corruption in Washington!!! Everybody has to tone it down! The leaders need to tell the truth for once!!!! Might as well add; "our news media must not be fake news!"
So deplorables will hear it one way, and we are supposed to hear it the other way.
