When an incident like happened today occurs, where schoolkids are gunned down at their school, people are going to post things about firearms that you will not like. It's only natural, see. Someone came to that school armed with firearms and killed a bunch of fellow student with those guns. Someone did that, and used firearms to take their lives.
So, if it upsets you when people call for strong firearms controls, just stay away from those threads, OK? Don't come in and post pro-gun crap in them. It's not the time for that, if there ever is such a time. All you'll accomplish is to make people even angrier about the dead easy access to firearms people have in this country. And they're already pissed off, anyhow.
In threads about the latest school shooting, your arguments for gun ownership are going to do nothing but create more anger. Now, if that's what you want to do, then I don't know what to say, except that you might be on the wrong website. Kids died. They were shot with firearms. They're dead now.
THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR PRO-GUN CRAP! Just lay off. Let people vent. Don't read their posts. They saw the news about a bunch of children whose lives are over due to firearms. Save it. Don't argue with them. Just STFU or post over in the Gungeon. Don't be a dick to people who are pissed because kids are dead. It's just not a good idea, OK?
That's my recommendation. I have no authority here, but that's my recommendation.

(66,286 posts)I served in the US Army from 1986 to 1993. I qualified Expert on the M-16 and the Beretta 9mm sidearm, and as part of a tank crew that shot a Superior score on live-fire qualification.
I've fired just about every weapon the Army fields, or fielded at that time, anyway, and I don't need to hear your horseshit about what a weapon is or is not.

(34,162 posts)Let me give you a HUGE AMEN!! I am so sick of being told that because I don't know the specific names of the parts of guns my beliefs and thoughts about controlling them are invalid. I am coming from the opposite end, no gun use at all, no knowledge of how they work. Gun control is not about technical issues but common sense ones, like requiring gun locks on all guns, requiring guns to be stored in a safe or at least a locked container, no guns for anyone under 21, anyone who keeps guns unsecured is committing a crime, all gun purchases require background checks, no guns for anyone with a restraining order or on a terrorist watch list, no assault weapons, no large capacity magazines (nothing over 10), no bump stocks, CDC compiles and publicly reports on gun deaths as well as injuries every year, if information on purchaser can't be obtained, no gun is issued, 10 day waiting period. These aren;t perfect, but certainly would prevent lots of deaths. Arming teachers and limiting entrances to schools to 1 are just methods that will increase the death count. Securing all entrances with metal detectors is a good thing, having mental health counselors at every school is a good thing. These are my current recommendations, nothing earth shattering, not ideal, but helpful and not difficult to do if anyone truly wants to limit gun deaths, especially mass school shootings.

We can be civil about it. We don't have to tell people to STFU.

That said, I dont do it anymore - havent for years, Im pretty sure - because it just came to the point that I couldnt stomach it. I just dont care about the sanctity of the 2nd Amendment now. Its all too much, and Ive been worn down. Fuck guns, and fuck gunners. You spoiled it for yourselves by never being willing to reason, so fuck it. Youve made enemies of allies, and steeled the opposition of those who dont agree with you.
Someday youll lose your little metal manhood enhancers, and youll only have yourselves to blame.

(25,586 posts)people are venting, and that their words dont hurt you. You have no need to step in and defend guns and the ownership thereof, if for no other reason than your rights arent under any threat. In fact, you probably have a greater range of firearms freedom than at any time in the last 75 years.
So just let it go. Ignore the angry words of people who are genuinely enraged that the rights you defend so vociferously are inextricably tied to the deaths of young innocents.
You arent helping.
You arent convincing.
Youre just rubbing salt in wounds for no reason.

(38,302 posts)... the posts of gun fetishists only reinforce my opinion.
Listen to MineralMan.
If, whenever there's a mass shooting you just have to come to DU to defend your gun habit, then maybe you have a problem.
I don't respect the second amendment as it's now interpreted any more than I'd respect someone's right to own slaves. Yet at one time owning slaves was Constitutional.
Most people in the U.S.A. don't care enough about guns to bother owning one.
Most gun owners may have one or two guns safely locked away that they rarely think about, and wouldn't be offended by any reasonable regulation.
But the gun fetishists are keenly aware of any possible threat to their bizarre obsession and will leap up to defend their guns before the bodies of the last victims of the latest mass shooting are laid to rest.

But anyway, it's just awful what you have to go through. Those horrible people, requesting some decency and restraint in the wake of the latest massacre of school children. The latest of the dozens of massacres to take place so far this year.
I see you're going to bravely and forcefully spurn that request for decency.

(14,558 posts)I was talking to my son-in-law who is an RKBA guy and not a Dem. In fact, he doesn't vote. But he said the same old shit about it isn't guns, and background checks wouldn't have prevented, etc. etc. etc.
I simply pointed to the grandchildren and said that if one child could be saved by a few sensible rules, then the whole thing would be worth it. No one is talking about confiscating guns. What we're talking about is banning assault weapons and bump stocks and imposing universal background checks.

(11,559 posts)Guns seem to be doing just fine on their own. People know about guns. They either want one, have some and don't need more, or they don't want one at all.
Dead children are not speed bumps to potentially impede the sale of guns, or something to be maneuvered around by talking up firearms.
Once again...guns don't need any help.
