Trump Voters Are Whining They Want "Respect" Because They're Terrified Of The Blue Wave

Paul Waldman writes:

In the endless search for the magic key that Democrats can use to unlock the hearts of white people who vote Republican, the hot new candidate is “respect.” If only they cast off their snooty liberal elitism and show respect to people who voted for Donald Trump, Democrats can win them over and take back Congress and the White House.

Respect? From the day Trump won the 2016 election by cheating, his supporters had one message for the left: "We won, you lost. Fuck you!" They were really consistent about it, too. A full year later, the go to answer for Trump's incompetence and criminal activity was "We won! Get over it. Fuck you, snowflake!" But over the last few months, that brand of belligerence fell away to be replaced by incoherent threats of civil war if Trump were impeached. Now, the same right wing that spent over a year screaming their hate at the rest of us are very concerned that they aren't being treated with respect? Really?
------------------
The real fear is the same fear that lies at the heart of all white Republican voters and that is that their time is done. If they get creamed in a midterm where Democratic turnout is traditionally weak while the economy is strong and unemployment is low, even with all of the voter suppression and Russian hacking that they won't admit exists but are relying on to save them, the future of the Republican Party doesn't just look bleak, it looks almost hopeless.

They are absolutely terrified.

2. "Why Democrats can't win the 'respect' of Trump voters"
Sun May 20, 2018, 07:53 AM
May 2018

is the title the Salt Lake City Tribune gave Paul Waldman's piece.

The Kansas City Star's is "Why Democrats should quit chasing Republican voters’ ‘respect’"

The Political Wire's "Democrats Will Never Win the Respect of Trump Voters" is by a different author.

We need to read articles before commenting on headlines. The far-left Daily Caller's cynical twist counts on most people just scanning headlines. Gratified vanity ("Republicans want our respect" ) is supposed to make people come back for more.

From Walman's article:

The assumption is that if Democrats simply choose to deploy this powerful tool of respect, then minds will be changed and votes will follow. This belief, widespread though it may be, is stunningly naive. ...

But the mistake is to ignore where the belief in Democratic disrespect actually comes from and to assume that Democrats have it in their power to banish it. It doesn’t come from the policies advocated by the Democratic Party, and it doesn’t come from the things Democratic politicians say. Where does it come from? An entire industry that’s devoted to convincing white people that liberal elitists look down on them.

It’s more than an industry, actually; it’s an industry, plus a political movement. The right has a gigantic media apparatus that is devoted to convincing people that liberals disrespect them, plus a political party whose leaders all understand that that idea is key to their political project and so join in the chorus at every opportunity.

If you doubt this, I’d encourage you to tune in to Fox News or listen to conservative talk radio for a week. ... The message is pounded home over and over: They (Democrats) hate you and everything you stand for. ...

We see this again and again: Democrats bend over backward to show conservative white voters respect, only to see some remark taken out of context and their entire agenda characterized as stealing from hard-working white people to give undeserved benefits to shiftless minorities. And then pundits demand, “Why aren’t you showing those whites more respect?” ...

So what are Democrats to do? The answer is simple: This is a game they cannot win, so they have to stop playing. Know at the outset that no matter what you say or do, Republicans will cry that you’re disrespecting good heartland voters. There is no bit of PR razzle-dazzle that will stop them. ...

Of course. (And, btw, the exact same thing goes for Democrats under the influence of this right-wing poisoning. We see that every day right here on DU.)

Who approached me about Trump “respect” is definitely not what they got at the time or in the future. Annoying deplorable Trumpers are very easily discouraged from ever interacting with non Trumpers.

from everyone they deem less then them selves.

If they understood the definition of respect and truly wanted it, orange face would not be shitting in the oval office right now.

Trump voters don’t get it. Even back in what they believed were the “Good Old Days” when the American populace was overwhelmingly white, almost every respectable person went to church on Sunday, Father knew best, and the women stayed home to mind the kiddies, suckers and other gullibles were disrespected not only for acting on their bad impulses but for the poor judgment they’d showed prior to acting on them.

One of the core beliefs of that bygone time was that the rural farmer was shrewd and wise enough to resist the blather of fast-talking Bull-slinging city slickers and that age and experience conferred wisdom.

In 2016 millions of anxious and often hurting country folk and the elderly went to the polls and voted for a BS artist and politicians who work to enrich the wealthiest few, not the average Joe or Jane. They made a sucker’s choice using suckers’ thinking and now they’re demanding respect. By dint of both our so-called “elitist” thinking and by the standards of that older time they profess to believe in, just why in Sheol and Gehenna do they believe they deserve it?

When Obama was running there were these rumors that he will start a race-war to take revenge for slavery. That he will pay reparations to African-Americans for slavery.

It's not the first time for "Oh Noes! They will treat us like we used to treat them!"

They are showing they are either:
Ignorant
Stupid
Ignorant and stupid
Racist
Greedy
Heartless
Lawless
Hypocrite (i.e. Evangelical Trump voter)
Evil

I find that I have lost respect for even the people I once respected who voted for this colossal jackass and continue to hang on to him despite the gargantuan amount of mounting evidence he has provided for his unfitness for office. Any of these traits that may apply to the Trump voter are not worthy of respect. Sorry.

Respect must be earned. As long as they support Trump and the hateful things he stands for, they will never get our respect.
