The first lava-related injury from the Kilauea eruption has been reported.
A man was hit in the leg with hot lava spatter Hawaii County officials confirmed Saturday.
A spokesperson says a homeowner was on his third-floor balcony at his home on Noni Farms Road when he was hit.
The lava flew through the air and landed on the man's leg, spokeswoman Janet Snyder said.
"It hit him on the shin, and shattered everything from there down on his leg," Snyder added.
The man was reportedly transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
------
A stream of lava threatened to block a key Hawaii highway on Sunday that serves as an escape route for coastal residents, while the first known serious injury was reported from fresh explosive eruptions from the Kilauea volcano.
A homeowner on Noni Farms Road who was on a third-floor balcony had his leg shattered from his shin to his foot when hit by lava spatter, said Janet Snyder, a spokesperson for the Office of the Mayor, County of Hawaii.
She added that lava spatters "can weigh as much as a refrigerator and even small pieces of spatter can kill." No other information was immediately available.

(23,338 posts)That homeowner won't be going to his third-floor balcony anytime soon. I wonder if they can save his leg.
I know it's cool to take a selfie with an erupting volcano, but seriously, ...

The type of lava Kilauea spews is generally thick and slow-moving, so it's often possible to outwalk it. This current event seems to be more explosive than usual, but the authorities seem to be doing a decent job keeping people as informed as they are can be. There are always some who try to wait it out, hoping it won't hit them.

I do hope they can put his leg back together.
