Trump Appointees Allow More Deadly Dust In Construction And Shipyard Sites

Reprinted with permission from DCReport.

Trump’s OSHA has started enforcing a watered-down safety standard on beryllium, a toxic metal that slowly damages the lungs and kills about 100 people a year.

The new standard went into effect May 11 and limits how much beryllium dust workers can be exposed to—one-tenth of the previous limit. About 62,000 workers are exposed to beryllium, including about 11,500 construction and shipyard workers.

The agency is still trying to revoke basic public health measures for construction and shipbuilding businesses such as providing protective clothing and equipment or testing workers for illnesses caused by beryllium. Those industries are expected to save an average of $957 for each of the estimated 11,486 employees who are exposed to beryllium or about $11 million.

OSHA recently settled part of a lawsuit brought by the National Association of Manufacturers, Materion Brush Inc. and two other companies about beryllium safety standards.

And the US Supreme Court ruled today..........if these shipyard workers want to sue................nope, your just fucked, they get to have there own company arbitrator decide................so in essence you will be blackmailed

It's like this sub-group of working class people (many are, of course, NON-white and most of them didn't vote for Trump- so this is more "white" than "working class&quot are fine with him reversing most of the labor gains of the 20th C-- worker protection, employer liability, employment opportunity, organizing unions....

I used to live in West Virginia, back when the coalmines ruled and could pollute every inch of that beautiful state, cause floods and ruin the rivers.

They voted madly for Trump, who wants to return that very state to the polluted condition of the past.

Why? I mean, I get why my rich investment broker friend votes for whoever is the GOP candidate. He thinks that he'll make more money under a GOP "business-friendly" president (though, of course, the markets almost always do much better under a Democrat).

And "standard GOP voters make up most of Trump voters (and Romney's etc). But these others-- why do they vote to deprive themselves of safety? I really think they are so consumed with resentment, they'd almost rather die than have someone they resent in charge. (I don't know why they don't resent the born-rich, worker-cheating Trump.)
