I had occasion to be with a lot of people over the last week - many of whom were supporters of Trump in 2016. It was interesting to hear how many of them now question why they voted for Trump and saying they were regretting their vote.
Now I'm wondering if I just happened upon a unique group of people or if anybody here on DU has run into the same with other former Trump voters?
Is this happening around the country? And if it is - why isn't the MSM reporting Trump losing his base?

(31,807 posts)I think they know that they are viewed as lacking morals, character and integrity in 'polite society' so they will put on one face to people they know think 45 is too wet to step on, and too low to kick -
But when around 'like minded' folks they probably high five each other and pledge to vote for 45 again in 2020.

(11,447 posts)Where 60% voted for him. I never hear him talked about in public, everyone is just doing normal non political stuff. Only time I hear something political is at my liberal dance class where its from our side.
I see some trucks with bumper stickers thats it.
This is a very christian area so one would hope they feel a bit guilty.

(115,669 posts)However, there are certainly some people who voted for him but who now regret their vote. These are probably people who voted for him only because they hated Hillary, having succumbed to the influence of 20 years of right-wing propaganda (I know a few of these), people who weren't paying attention to issues but liked the idea of someone who seemed to be "anti-establishment" or who liked the idea of an apparently successful businessman as president, as well as those who always vote Republican regardless of the candidate. At least some of those people are probably changing their minds. However, there is an immovable base, maybe 30% or so, who will not, no matter what happens.

(56,828 posts)either doesn't vote, votes 3rd party or stays home, it can make a big difference. Just 1 Trump voter in 100 doing that in 2016 would have given Clinton the electoral votes of not just Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, but also North Carolina and Florida.

(11,447 posts)Last week but even though my progressive candidate won for dems if you total all dems and republicans that voted republicans had almost twice the amount
My state Oregon has 1/3 no party that couldnt vote in primary so I just hope some of them vote in November. It is so large because we have automatic voter registration and they put you in no party until you choose one.

(217 posts)This was told to me to console me and tell me these people were ok. I told the person that each of those people then voted Republican down the ticket. They cannot feel good about not voting Trump when they instilled the Republican party. The Republican party is the problem and a vote for them has put us here.
I do not give a pass to someone who didn't vote Trump but supports the Republican Party.

(6,377 posts)He may be losing his grip on the swing voters who went his way mostly because they hated Hillary, but I don't think his base is abandoning him.

(63,221 posts)A. They could not bring themselves to vote for Hillary or B. They didn't like him but he was the republican candidate and who else were they going to vote for. They wanted a republican who could win.
The people we see as their base are the loudest and most visible of the deplorables, but I don't thing that demographic represents everyone who voted for him in the last election. The worst of them are getting worse and more violent in their language and threats, but I think there is a silent block of Trump voters who just wish he would go away and would give anything to have someone like Romney or Bush back again.

(7,396 posts)Yes, he has his cult of followers who adore him, no matter what he does. But there are millions of people that knew exactly what kind of person he was and voted for him anyway. They hate liberals more than criminals. These are the people who put him in office and the same mentality allows him to stay.

(34,661 posts)watch the Primary results in the next few weeks. This will give us some hard numbers on voter shifts if any.

(1,765 posts)But I have also seen a lot of the DIE HARD fire breathing Trump supporters. These people like to speak up more which I would gather to guess the former Trump supporters who currently do not support him might just be more quiet.
Fingers crossed there are a lot more that we just don't see.

(8,922 posts)actually believing he was going to help them, who are starting to figure out they got nothing except the 1.5 trillion bill for his tax scam. But if you put yourself in their place who would want to admit they were that stupid? So maybe there will be more of those closet regretters than we know, come election time.

(115,669 posts)if they get any at all, from neighbors and relatives. Personally, I think it's stupid not to pay attention to politics but the reality is that many people don't find it interesting and don't watch the news, even Fox. SO they might have heard only that Trump is a shrewd businessman (ha!) and that Hillary Clinton was bad, somehow. People vote on the basis of little or no accurate information and don't realize what the result is until the shit hits their fan.

(37,428 posts)You get a few samplings in stories designed to keep their dream alive, but Trump's "win" was a big surprise for more than Russian reasons. His incoherent hate speech really did reach hitherto-unsung pinheads who turned up to vote.
They can't be counted on to turn up in the same numbers, and Trump/GOP policies are going to depress that vote this time around.
