(51,584 posts)The gun rights organization spent a stupendous $54.4 million in the 2016 election cycle, almost all of it in "independent expenditures," meaning spending for or against a candidate but not a direct contribution to a campaign. The money went almost entirely to Republicans to a degree that almost looks like a misprint (but isn't): Of independent expenditures totaling $52.6 million, Democrats received $265. Yes, that's 265 dollars.

(38,414 posts)It is all about keeping the "gun laws" as lenient as possible. Protect gun owners. Make buying a gun as easy as possible. What happens after that, means nothing to the NRA

Because there are -- and will continue to be -- many distractions from others, against the heart of this particular issue.

(13,081 posts)We need to vote, get everyone else to vote, and make sure that our politicians know WHY were voting for them and that we will punish them at the ballot box if they dont get off their cowardly asses and do more.
We also need to write, call, email, and show up in person, just to talk about gun safety. One issue. I used to say we need to do this when there arent any mass shootings, because gun safety issues tend to die down a few weeks later, except now there are too many mass shootings to ever get it out of the mainstream consciousness.
And we need to talk about more than mass shootings. Suicide and homicide disproportionately affect communities of color and poor families. Theyre not as scary as the CNN televised mass slaughters, but theyre just as devastating to the families involved and there are far more of them.

(36,747 posts)NRA would rather have dead children than any gun control.
To the gun industry, dead children are merely collateral damage/acceptable losses for gun industry profits and political donations.
