Georgia Election: Stacey Abrams wins Democratic primary
Former House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams won the Democratic nomination for Georgias top office on Tuesday, defeating ex-state Rep. Stacey Evans and advancing her quest to become the nations first black female governor.
She will face one of five Republicans in November in the race to succeed Gov. Nathan Deal, a competition that will test whether the state is truly competitive after more than a decade of GOP rule.
...
The Democrats largely abandoned centrist talk to appeal instead to left-leaning voters with a promise of implementing gun control, increasing financial aid for lower-income families and taking steps toward the decriminalization of marijuana.
Thats a stark contrast from more moderate appeals from a generation of Democratic candidates for governor, who often sought the National Rifle Associations endorsement and touted fiscally conservative policies.
They are echoing many in the partys base who insisted on that shift. Claudia Colichon, who lives in north Atlanta, said she demands candidates who embrace mass transit funding and fight for gun control.
There needs to be a progressive change, said Colichon. People are seeing that conservative policies arent working.

(5,210 posts)I'm thrilled for her, for us. I tremble at the thought of the November elections because this is still such a bigoted state, but I just heard Rachel say that she thinks Abrams is one of the most talented politicians around. MY b iggest fear is that we have those damned electronic voting machines, altho there's a lawsuit trying to demand paper ballots, and we HAVE "lost" elections we didn't really lose, including IMO Jon Ossoff's a few months back.

(7,888 posts)Georgia, for the progressives in the Democratic Party and most of all for an excellent woman who ran a stellar campaign. On to a win in November for Stacey Abrams.

(22,912 posts)Either overtly or covertly. The same is true when a white candidate defeats a black candidate. It is odd that you ask that question only here. Would you have asked that question had Evans won?
The truth is that race as a factor usually works against Black Candidates running against whites, for the most part is simply assumed. They even have a political science term for it, it is called "The Bradley Effect". Here is a Wiki discussion of it:

(4,532 posts)Abrams is a total badass. If she doesn't win in November, I'm gonna come down there and personally slap everyone who doesn't vote for her.
