(6,916 posts)If you pick a sporting event and organize a few people, I will come with you. We will kneel right next to each other during the anthem.
You choose time and place.
(Subject to my ability to get there. Cant travel as easily as I used to.)

(14,249 posts)When he refused to be inducted into the Army, he was a traitor, a militant, hated America, etc. By the time he died, everyone loved him for being a hero even though they couldnt remember why he was a hero.
And then, weeks after he died, they went right back to viciously attacking Colin Kaepernack.
But we know that, in 30 years, the people behaving so disgracefully now will all be pretending to have been on the right side of history today.

(4,607 posts)Trump and his white nationalist base aren't "whitesplaining" anything -- they openly despise MLK, despite any perfunctory lip service to the contrary.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)And FYI, pretty much everybody believes in Dr. King - after all, he isnt Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or Jesus Christ. The issue is that plenty of white people who claim to love and revere Dr. King feel entitled to lecture black people about how were protesting all wrong and then turn around and defy everything he stood for. And they arent all white nationalists. Some of them, in fact, are right here on DU.
So, no, Im not going to give it a rest. If you have a problem with anything I have to say, youre certainly free to put me on Ignore.

(4,607 posts)You're free to deliberately misinterpret "believe" in the literal sense, but I think it's pretty clear to everyone that I meant it as shorthand for "those who genuinely believe in what MLK advocated and stood for." It's true that some people sincerely argue that radical and divisive protests (e.g. some of the BLM protests) aren't consistent with Dr. King's message, but kneeling at a freaking NFL game doesn't fall into that category. The only people who are worked up about NFL protests are people who are obviously opposed to what MLK stood for, despite any perfunctory lip service they pay to him.

(4,483 posts)were considered "radical and divisive" in their day. That's why peaceful marches were met with attack dogs and firehoses.
I think a great many people, including many people who would say they believe in MLK's message, consider kneeling during the national anthem as radical and divisive because they honestly believe that the gesture is meant as disrespect to veterans and mom's apple pie, not as a peaceful, MLK-endorsed demonstration against injustice. The gesture has been demonized by the RW and to some extent in MSM when they give air time to people who do not understand what the gesture means.
And at least part of why they do not understand what the gesture means--aside from being told lies by the likes of Fox News--is that they are not "woke" (god I hope I'm using that term properly) to the fact of police murder of black men. It is my belief that they do not want to acknowledge this fact because it upsets their white-privileged view of the cops as the good guys you turn to for help when a black person appears somewhere you don't think she belongs.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)And that sentiment is prevalent among many right here on DU, regardless how woke they think they may be.
