Despite 70% of Democrats wanting impeachment. #PelosiTownHall
Edited to add video. BTW, this post was meant to summarize what was happening at the event in real time, not to attack, so calm down (please ).

(3,363 posts)enthusiasm from Republicans. If Dems loudly proclaim they're primary agenda is to impeach trump, it will excite the Republican base to get out and vote to keep Democrats out of power.
My guess is if Dems do gain the House, she'll bring it up.

(14,530 posts)The republicans are going to make impeachment their central campaign strategy. By saying this she has enabled the Dems to go on the offense with policy and expose republicans as utterly bereft and craven in that.
They won't be able to be moderate because of trump and they won't be able to be far right because their policies are proving to be chaotic, repulsive and ruinous to the average American's wallet.
Force Rs to defend trump and his failures, while showing they have the policies and ideas to help the American people.

(108,977 posts)because we couldn't control the process and the outcome is certain -- we are a minority and we would lose.
And if we failed now, we wouldn't get a second shot, no matter what Mueller's investigation revealed.

(6,288 posts)Impeachment papers have actually been introduced by Dems, & quickly buried by Paul Ryan.
There will be no impeachment of Trump if ya don't vote Dem in the midterms.
That's it.

(108,977 posts)And she is correct: impeachment isn't on the "policy agenda" the way fixing Obamacare, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, the environment, and all the other policy issues should be.

"I do not think that impeachment is a policy agenda," she said.
The California Democrat pointed to the ongoing special counsel investigation led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, saying everyone should "let it take its course" before judging the outcome, and noting the difficult, divisive nature of moving to oust a president.
"Impeachment is, to me, divisive," Pelosi said. "Again, if the facts are there, if the facts are there, then this would have to be bipartisan to go forward. But if it is viewed as partisan, it will divide the country, and I just don't think that's what we should do."

Hyping the impeachment train will only motivate Repubs to come out and vote.
Polling suggests that large majorities want the ivestigations to continue. Smaller majorities want impeachment.

(51,585 posts)She is smart and knows what she is doing. Impeachment as an issue would be playing into the GOP's hands for the midterms. She wants to focus on Dem issues as a whole party. Impeachment would push middle of the road voters to stay home or vote GOP. 58% of Americans want Mueller's investigation to go forward and that number keeps growing. She wants Dems to focus on healthcare, taxes, infrastructure, and things that will improve people's lives.

And I say this as someone who signed Steyers petition. No question Trump is unfit, unethical, corrupt, and dangerous, etc. But unfortunately our system gives corrupt Republicans the ability to prevent impeachment.
For. Now.

(9,478 posts)You need 2/3rds of the Senate to vote guilty in an impeachment, so let's wait and see what Mueller can prove before we go there, because we are not going to get any Republicans to go along unless the case is good (and even then, it may not matter to them).

Nancy Pelosi tells the truth, no matter how unpalatable. GOTV and change the composition of the House and Senate. It is the only way.

(15,064 posts)in this dilemma. The decision to put things in the past, to not apply the law and let it work, has weakened the law and the will to use the law against a President who is inept and doing major damage to the fabric of our democratic republic.
There was plenty of evidence to do so.

Impeaching DT isn't a policy. And it makes no sense to pursue it till Mueller has finished his work -- and we hopefully have a majority in at least the House.
