Too bad our "weak," "spineless" Democrats aren't doing anything.

WASHINGTON Responding to teacher walkouts across the country, congressional Democrats on Tuesday proposed raising teachers salaries by canceling the tax cut for the nations top 1 percent of earners....
At a congressional hearing Tuesday, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos agreed that teachers are underpaid, but offered few concrete suggestions to boost their income.
Teachers of America, we Democrats hear you loud and clear, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said at a news conference. Put simply, instead of giving a tax cut to the richest of Americans, we should give a pay raise to teachers in this country who our students depend on to succeed....
But she defended budget cuts that affect teacher training and support programs, saying, Tough decisions were made as to where to recommend resources be focused. She also called for flexibilities in other funding streams, but offered no specific details.

(51,582 posts)work, education and experience as long as the profession is mainly made up of women. Teachers have been underpaid for over a century and it is well known. Even old movies from the 30s and 40s have comments made about teaching being known as a labor of love and not a high paying job. I guess they think concern and compassion that women are supposed to pride themselves for in teaching takes the place of a livable wage. You can't pay the rent with compassion PEOPLE!

(51,582 posts)As a teacher we were told that New Zealand had the best system and my district would fly "experts" in for intense training every month for a year. Meanwhile we got no COLA for 5 years and 30% staff cuts during that time. The New Zealand methods didn't improve learning as far as my fellow teachers are concerned. Maybe the district should have looked into Finland instead.

(7,680 posts)top of the world, up there with (I think) Korea and Japan. Their teachers are very well paid and have become idolized members of the society (and they make their teacher ed students work really hard to be certified.) There is little or no homework and an emphasis on a lot of art and music, and shorter school days than we have. They don't use standardized tests. I found the book in my public library.

(51,582 posts)I had to give my 6 year olds standardized tests twice a year...and they can't even read well at that age and grade. I had to take all their tests and transfer their answers to those scan tron (fill in the circle) forms then enter those into a computer at home since the single class computer was always broken and there are no tech people to fix it on the school sites...RIDICULOUS! We spent more time training them on HOW to take a test than the actual content. I miss very little about teaching. I had to stop due to my health 5 years ago.
