Some NFL players are reportedly considering new ways to protest after NFL owners voted on a new national anthem policy Wednesday, reports Sports Illustrated's Robert Klemko.
According to Klemko, some are discussing ways to skirt new rules "just to spite the NFL."
The policy removes a requirement for players to be on the field for the anthem, and gives players the option to stay in the locker room.
Teams will be fined for any personnel that "do not show proper respect for the flag and Anthem on the sidelines.
Other journalists were hearing similar things from players they talked to.

(6,831 posts)Really, this is bollocks and it's gone too far. You cannot strip people of their First Amendment rights, and you shouldn't even try. It's unAmerican.
The NFL owners caved to trump. What they didn't understand is that trump is never satisfied. If they thought this was going to be the end of this, they were sadly deluded. You go not give in to a bully because it never ends. Mark my words, he will be back with more demands. The man is never gracious, not even in victory.
And isn't everybody about tired of his "demands ?"

(6,831 posts)The first amendment references the right to freedom of speech, as in " . . . Congress shall pass no law that abridges . . ." But in this case, it was trump himself who bullied the NFL owners, by threatening to impact their profits, to mandate this. THAT, my friend, is blackmail and extortion. Both illegal.
The Founding Fathers did not believe that a sitting president needed to be reminded of this.

(26,044 posts)...and the league alone defines what's "disrespectful," that won't work, either. I'm sure raising a fist, having "BLM" written on your helmet, wearing a black glove on the hand over your heart even not keeping your gaze on the flag will be judged a fineable offense. One owner has already said that teams linking arms during the anthem, as several did last season, would be banned under the new rule.

(82,849 posts)The players' union should file a grievance. If the owners are going to demand specific performance from the players, they need to pay them for it.

Kap paid a far greater price than a simple fine. He should be recognized for the brilliance of his protest. Sadly, the "patriots" hijacked the protest and we are all too willing to make it about the flag.
