The US Department of Defense funded a series of studies on advanced aerospace technologies, including warp drives.
The studies came out of a program that also funded research into UFO sightings.
One report describes the possibility of using dark energy to warp space and effectively travel faster than light.
However, a theoretical physicist says there's "zero chance that anyone within our lifetimes or the next 1,000 years" will see it happen.

Speed of light? Why does our military think so small?

(21,550 posts)Any beings that travel faster than the speed of light will be way, way smarter than us and can enslave us if they wanted to, but my guess is they will be too smart to do such a thing.

(31,261 posts)The nearest planet that MAY have life in around 19 trillion miles away from us. Let that sink in for a while...................................................... An alien craft that can reach us is unlikely to break down and get left here. The being running it would be so much smarter than we are that they would know how to completely disguise it from us, or vaporize it. Scifi movies are great, but believe me, if alien beings reach us, we have big problems if they are anything but pure pacifists. We won't be collecting their hardware, because we will likely have no idea that it is here.

It takes over 8 minutes for light to travel from the sun to the earth.
In order to to have the stars appear like that, you'd have to travel hundreds of thousands of times the speed of light.
