So, the owners decide that players can't kneel during the Anthem. What will they do if black players ignore their decision, instead of saying, "Yassuh, Boss?"
Without the 70% of players who are people of color, there is no NFL. I think it may be time for the players to say, "Enough!"
That's what I think.

(21,104 posts)This is their "official" statement from the website:
NFLPA Statement on New Anthem Policy
The NFL chose to not consult the union in the development of this new policy. NFL players have shown their patriotism through their social activism, their community service, in support of our military and law enforcement and yes, through their protests to raise awareness about the issues they care about.
The vote by NFL club CEOs today contradicts the statements made to our player leadership by Commissioner Roger Goodell and the Chairman of the NFLs Management Council John Mara about the principles, values and patriotism of our League.
Our union will review the new policy and challenge any aspect of it that is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement.

It's a business for players too
PITTSBURGH -- Le'Veon Bell turned down a contract offer that would've paid him more over the next two years than he can make off of consecutive franchise tags
The Pittsburgh Steelers offered their star running back $30 million in the first two years of the proposed deal, according to the NFL Network.
Bell rejected the deal to play on a one-year, $12,120,000 franchise tag deal. If Bell were to play on a second franchise tag contract in the 2018 season it would be for no less than $14,544,000, giving him a $26,664,000 haul over two seasons.

(6,916 posts)Which is why we should gather a whole lot of DUers, black and white, and kneel together someplace to demonstrate we stand with the players.

(146,262 posts)It's pretty simple, really. I'm not a football fan, so I won't be joining you in a useless demonstration by fans.
This is all going to be up to the players. Without them, there's no game at all.

(6,916 posts)The players dont have a ton of leverage because there is a huge supply of players wanting to be in the NFL. The only way they have leverage is if they band together, as in the strikes in the past. (And the NFL Union is the weakest of all the major sports, in part due to short nfl careers compared to baseball and basketball.)
On the other hand, the NFL wants any additional cent of profit, so losing fans hurts.
Fans are the key. Unless the players union can do something together (and after the last CBA negotiation and the concussion settlement, that seems unlikely.)

(3,425 posts)but I believe the fans include great number that would either put the sport before the cause or are just too uninformed to understand what is at stake.

(296 posts)Where are the white players in all this? Certainly they can see the problem facing the Black Community. Are they not just as socially responsible as the Black players? They should all stand together, then the team owners and the NFL would have no recourse of punishment against them. I will be disappointed if entire teams do not stand together on this issue.
