....maybe it's more a question of trapping the person hiring the hit men. I imagine hit men are ten a penny in that part of the world and of little interest to anybody, least of all the cops. The cops are probably their 9-5 employers anyway, or the Army.

I'm guessing they were onto whoever it was that wanted him killed - and caught them standing down the hit once they heard on the (ultimately fake) news that someone else had beat them to it ?

Obviously I could be wildly wrong on this, but what else fits ? Interesting to see how this story develops. Maybe the guy is a journalistic hero, maybe it's a genius security operation - or maybe it's just a publicity stunt, maybe it'll backfire. Jury's out.......
