General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI think "wypipo" is a terrific term
It is funny and snarky and pointed, and the "outrage" over it comes from a place of privilege, the same place where people rail against "Dear White People," Black Lives Matter, and Oprah buying $500 handbags.
I also could care less about black folks using the term "cracker," and I say that as someone whose maternal side is 75% cracker.
Y'all wypipo outraged by all of this make me lol, and I'm a wypipo.*
That is all.
*Disclaimer: I do get really tan when I'm out in the sun, but I still have 100% VERY wypipo genes.

(36,103 posts)I don't get much of this...but somehow it seems that if whites embrace the term as 'funny,' it diminishes the seriousness behind movements like Black Lives Matter
But maybe that's just me

(22,336 posts)Humor can have great power.
Have you asked participants of Black Lives Matter how they feel about the term "wypipo?" Don't appeal to their authority if you don't know they'd come down on your side.

(4,407 posts)I think it is because it doesn't conjure up just images of Deplorables in MAGA hats. It can include the white people who think they are not at all racist but stand all over white privilege. I think it makes some people nervous because it makes us question our current roles while living with white privilege.

It just provides another way to set up an "us vs. them" mentality.

(22,336 posts)particularly among African Americans. There was no good specific word to call out people who do or say racist things and are outraged at the suggestion they might be racist.
But a small number of white people at DU find it uncomfortable. They want us to center their feelings of discomfort over the feelings of people of color, who are the victims of racism every day and should be able to speak about that racism in whatever way they need in order to discuss it and process what is happening to them. And they should certainly be able to poke at racism. "Wypipo" is a stick used to poke at racism.

(4,387 posts)According to the people who define the word it's not a positive thing. Yet you say:
It's not something you want to be. You're calling yourself a racist bigot. There are no positives to it.
It's a word that used to describe only one particular race of people in completely negative ways. It's a race based slur. Why it's considered acceptable here is beyond me. We wouldn't tolerate that about any other group.

(111,078 posts)Black peoples disdain for proper English and academic achievement is a myth.
<snip>
Ebonics is mocked as a fake language, and efforts to use it in schools have sparked vocal opposition. When the Oakland, California, school board approved Ebonics for use in its schools in 1996, a flurry of public figures condemned the decision. I understand the attempt to reach out to these children, but this is an unacceptable surrender, bordering on disgrace, said the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who later reversed his stance, but not before he was endorsed by a wide range of people.
At the time, linguists protested the criticism, noting the extent to which Ebonicsofficially known as African American Vernacular Englishis recognized as a language system with its own grammar and pronunciations, with roots in the regional dialects of 17th-century Great Britain. Far from being slang or broken, AAVE is a distinct form of English used by many blacks in informal settings.

Ogbu was thorough and convincing enough to spawn a whole genre of popular work around acting white. Besides Riley, the most recent contributions include Ron Christies Acting White: The Curious History of a Racial Slur and Stuart Bucks Acting White: The Ironic Legacy of Desegregation, whichlike Ogbus workargues that blacks lag in educational outcomes because of a cultural bias against academic achievement.
In the last 10 years, however, new research has challenged the acting white theory. In a 2005 paper, sociologists Karolyn Tyson, William Darity Jr., and Domini Castellino found that black adolescents are generally achievement oriented and that racialized peer pressure against high academic achievement is not prevalent in all schools.

(37,748 posts)I honestly don't believe any of the outrage is sincere. At all. Not on DU. Not at the fictional places used as the "well, I heard..." or the "at my offices..." anecdotal posts.
The pretense of outrage however, is really effective cover for a lot of people who wish to pretend maltreatment, discrimination, and persecution at the hands of minorities.
Because lacking that pretense, the obvious privileges they consistently deny as a reality would have to be recognized.
I doubt they realize they don't get it both ways.
