On his television program today, End Times prepper pastor Jim Bakker claimed that he was sent to prison for fraud in the 1980s because powerful people feared that he might use his influence to help elect Pat Robertson as president.

After a 16-month federal grand-jury investigation, Bakker was indicted on 8 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy. A jury found him guilty on all 24 counts. Specifically, Bakker sold $1,000 "lifetime memberships" in PTL, entitling buyers to an annual three-night stay at a luxury hotel at Heritage USA. Although thousands of of memberships were sold, only one hotel was ever finished. Bakker sold "exclusive partnerships" which exceeded capacity, raising more than twice the money needed to build the hotel. Much of the money paid Heritage USA's operating expenses, and Bakker kept $3.4 million.

A $279,000 payoff for the silence of Jessica Hahn, who alleged that Bakker and pastor John Wesley Fletcher drugged and raped her, was paid with PTL's funds. Bakker kept two sets of books to conceal accounting irregularities. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Bakker

I actually saw him live and in the flesh at the federal prison in Minnesota when visiting a client there. He's a weird-looking little guy.

Branson MO area for a number of years and saw this con man wastoid a couple of times in person.
As I recall he was nasty and rude and one time was doing a "faith healing" in a theatre lobby for
a show I was attending, I left...total creep. He is basically doing the same/similar condo scam at his end
times resort in Blue Eye MO, just outside of Branson...I despise the asshole...
