Horse meat secret to Kazakh champion's success

AFP - Kazakhstan Olympic champion Ilya Ilyin says eating horse meat is the key to success in weightlifting.

The 24-year-old set two new world records on his way to a second successive Olympic title on Friday and then advocated a diet of chicken -- and horse.

"I do beleive food plays an important role in preparation for the Olympics or any competition," said Ilyin.

"Of course you have to be careful and know what you're eating. I try not to eat anything that is too fat or sweet. My favourite food is chicken and horse meat. I would consider them ideal food because they are very easy to digest.

"You don't waste any personal energy and you don't have to digest difficult things like lamb or pork.

"Chicken and horse meat are the best foods for weightlifters and good food is important."

Low in fat, high in protein. And very palatable, from what I've heard, like a combination of beef and venison.

Interesting fact: Unlike other meats, horse actually gets MORE tender with the age of the animal.

I would have thought that all meats would be pretty similar in that regard...

Mammal flesh is mammal flesh, period. It all digests the same, and has the same nutritive value (allowing for variations in fat content, anyway)

Reptile, bird, and amphibian flesh tends to be less dense on average, and thus moderately easier to digest... Not enough that your stomach would ever notice the difference. Same with fish. Once meat drops into that pouch full of hydrochloric acid you keep in your torso, it more or less slurries all the same.

But, some peopel think sucking down a raw egg every day is the secret to their success, or eating only beef-flavored ramen, or whatever. THis dude thinks horseflesh is the key. Whatever.
