What Can You Do To Make The World A Better Place?
As Mother Teresa advised, go home and hug your family, for the impact of that seemingly little act could be profound. But in addition, everywhere you go, offer a kind word of support, letting people know you care about their well-being.
And by care, I mean sincerely feeling compassion for them as you seek to find opportunities to give them a helping hand, which is something all of us need at points in time. If you will do these simple things, a person at a time, you will be making the world a better place, for like a ripple in a pond, it will travel far beyond your reach, as they in turn respond to your kind deed.

Not to pick at your post, but... Well, I guess I am picking at your post.
My apologies.

(15,882 posts)I just don't see how that makes the world a better place. Better would be jobs enough for those who want them, not excuses to keep the status quo intact. imho.

(28,762 posts)With all the unemployment, I think it's only right to let someone else work and provide for their young families.
I want to enjoy what little time I have left before I do become useless, is that so wrong?

(15,882 posts)is no "great good" in walking away just to let another person work. That's just perpetuating the problem. The battle should be fought against the enemy, not making one person poor who wasn't while enriching another. That's not how people get ahead.
On the other hand if you are not happy, have a hard time getting out of bed to go do what you do, are ready to have worked the last job you will ever have, and a change doesn't cause you harm, I would enthusiastically say go for it.

'productive' in the sense of producing something they are proud of & feel ownership of.
most jobs are crap, done by someone else's rules, for someone else's goals, using methods designed by someone else. many are socially harmful. & in most you have to take a lot of shit.

(15,882 posts)worth there, it would cause them harm to leave. I want to see everyone prosper. And I don't see privilege where it hasn't been earned, whether one is wealthy or not. So I don't see any moral upsizing, the right to any gold stars by one's name, in giving up a job just to open up a job. If someone wants to claim that, good for them, hope they have enough to pay their own bills in the future.
But yeah, I agree with you about jobs. You would be good at writing job descriptions, by the way.

why would i be good at writing job descriptions? you mean like this?
"Wanted: Person with high tolerance for boredom and abuse, to sit in a cubicle all day calling people to offer them services none of them want that are basically a scam anyway. Wages: shit. Benefits: none, including to society."

(15,882 posts)create and work. And that's qualitatively different than the idea I have seen b4 of people giving up their livelihood to provide some supposed opening when the net outcome is likely that both will be poorer in the long run.
As far as the job ad - exactly. I think a little more honesty would be a good thing these days. Given how many jobs are now living up to the ideals you set forth in that post, it's a damn wonder those who write the ads that actually appear in the paper aren't sued for fraud.
We were at the store tonight, and my wife happened to ask the cashier if she was going to move to the new one when the additional location opens in October. The clerk grimaced, and said "you bet". Told us how bad the mgr was there.
I couldn't help but think to myself "from one shit job to another". I really hope it's better for her, I really do. But I say that knowing I really don't have any realistic expectations that she will find what she is looking for, just a different address.
