................
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus waded into the Harry Reid-Mitt Romney tax drama on Sunday, calling the Senate majority leader a "dirty liar" for his accusation that Romney didn't pay any taxes for a decade.
"As far as Harry Reid is concerned, listen, I know you might want to go down that road. Im not going to respond to a dirty liar," Priebus told ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos. "If thats on the agenda, Im not going go there. This is just a made-up issue."
"You're saying youre not going to go down that road?" Stephanopoulos responded. "You just called him a dirty liar. You stand by that -- you think Harry Reid is a dirty liar?"
"I just said it," Priebus said.

I can't talk about Mitt's problems so I will talk about Harry Reid.

(111,052 posts)He says that with such authority. Has he seen Mitt Romney's returns? Otherwise, he is talking out of his ass. Have you seen his returns, Mr. Priebus? I will ask you since I doubt very much that the reporter would ask you such a simple question.

(32,075 posts)You know how republicans like to project their own faults and misdeeds on others. And, I'm sure he has seen Mitt the Twit's tax returns. That's why he's trying to deflect this whole thing onto Harry Reid.
I always think it's projection when people use that kind of physical language, it's often an expression of conservative self-loathing IMO.

(111,052 posts)And I don't think he showed them to John McCain in the last election either. I haven't heard McCain say anything about how many years of returns he had seen??

(602 posts)My first and only impression when reading this post was, here go the Republicans again, projecting their own faults onto others -- Harry Reid in this case. But you beat me to it... No problem -- fact is, Romney and the Republicans have the "dirty (rotton) liar" act perfected. Pathetic.

This clown has not seen Romney's tax returns so he is in no position to make such rotten charges. Besides, when someone stoops this low it is usually an attempt to cover up the fact that the story has a great deal of merit. Note that Romney has only said that he has paid lots of taxes every year but stopped short of saying he paid lots of income taxes. Besides, Romney has a history of tax issues. He has been audited a number of times and he had to re-file his 1999 and 2000 Massachusetts income taxes to change his status from non-resident to resident in order to be eligible to run for Governor of Massachusetts in 2002 so we know that Romney has tax issues; we just don't know the extent of those tax issues. To date Romney has not release a complete set of federal tax returns for any single year. Some required forms were not included in the data he released for 2010 involving his Swiss bank account. Romney needs to come clean rather than have his people calling others a "dirty liar" when there is no proof to support that smear. Romney needs to man up and stop whining too because his side is responsible for far more of the stuff he claims than is the other side and this attack is exhibit A.

Since the Koches fund the standard GOP. and more directly, their driftnet to catch their opposition within the GOP, the Koch-owned Libertarian Teahajdists and their former candidate on the Libertarian Party ticket, Ron Paul, this might ignite an fission reaction inside the convention.
If the Paulbots ever realize they've been played by the Koch brothers with their corporate money, as founders of the John Birch Society, and have been co-opted by Alex Jones with the Liberty & Freedom Patriot conspiracy theorist, they've lost their 'Revolution.'
If the Teahajdists realize their Tea Party Express is run by the same Libertarian corporatists who took their jobs, brought in illegal immigrants, fight against their having a job with low-paid visa imported workers, and outsourced their work with the US Chamber of Commerce, taking in foreign, non-patriot, anti-American big money, it'll be an implosion of epic proportions.
Please, Lord, please, let it all come out!
They might even bring in the guillotine themselves if they see their heroes in a different light as Thom Hartmann details here:
Thom Hartmann: Conservative Millennials, Boomers & Libertarians all being Conned
Multigenerational political influence by a very narrow special interest group is rare, but we're seeing it played out right now in front of us. A billionaire family - the Kochs - have gone from influencing my father's generation, to my generation, to my kids' generation - and very few Americans realize it. Daddy Koch - Fred - made his first millions palling around with Joe Stalin in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s. As the fascists rose to power in Europe in the 1930s, he was an enthusiastic supporter of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, who invented the word "fascist," meaning essentially the takeover of democratic governments by big business interests. Mussolini went so far as to dissolve the Italian parliament, and replace elected politicians with representatives of each district's largest corporations. Fred Koch and Mussolini both particularly hated the trade unionists and their sometimes allies, the communists. So after Mussolini, along with his ally Hitler, lost World War II against America, Fred Koch brought the anti-communist pro-business-running-goverment - what some would call "facist" - torch to America big time, helping start the John Birch Society.
Two of their biggest efforts are pretty well known. After the Supreme Court ruled, in 1954, in the Brown versus Board of Education case, that segregation in schools was unconstitutional, the John Birch Society put up billboards all across America calling for the impeachment of the Chief Justice of the Court, Earl Warren. Daddy Fred Koch was very concerned about the integration of our schools - in fact, he wrote, "The colored man looms large in the Communist plan to take over America." With JFK's election, Fred Koch's John Birch Society went off again - this time against JFK. Using rhetoric not that different from the "secret Muslim" plots the Tea Party promotes about Obama, in a 1963 speech Fred said that " infiltrate the highest offices of government in the U.S. until the President is a Communist, unknown to the rest of us.
When JFK was scheduled to come to Dallas that year, the JBS distributed flyers saying, "Wanted, for Treason" all around the town two days before his arrival. On the day JFK was assassinated, large ads ran in the Dallas newspapers attacking Kennedy as being soft on Castro, among other things. That was my dad's generation. Daddy Koch died, and his sons Charles and David took over the family business of promoting the business and billionaire takeover of our American government.
They're doing it with a two-pronged attack. For people over forty, they're funding the Tea Party through a variety of groups, most notably Americans for Prosperity and Freedomworks. And for people under forty, they're funding Libertarian think tanks, like the Charles Koch Foundation (which was renamed as the Cato Institute), and the Reason Foundation, where David Koch is a trustee, which happily embraces a new generation of young people with the idea that "freedom" means the "freedom" to buy politicians and the "freedom" to pollute. For the young people, of course, the Libertarians throw in the "freedom" to smoke dope and hire a hooker, but those are just bones being cynically tossed to young potheads and young protoge's of Dick Morris.
But the Koch's have been inside the Libertarian movement from its beginning - 32 years ago this year, David Koch was the Libertarian Party's official candidate for Vice President of the United States. It's really pretty incredible, but it's all true. The main agenda of the Koch's John Birch Society was to enhance the power and control of our government by big business and billionaires, while fighting organized labor and people like me who were protesting the Vietnam War. The main agenda of the Koch's Tea Party is to get millionaires elected to Congress and have them cut taxes and regulations for Koch Industries and other polluting corporations, while fighting organized labor and people like me who were protesting the Iraq War.
And the main agenda of the Koch's Libertarians - again, funded and trained by the Koch Brothers - is to keep intact the power of big money over our government, cut taxes and regulations on billionaires and polluting industries, while fighting organized labor and people like me who are protesting the corporate takeover of the United States of America. Three generations of Americans, all duped by the same billionaire family. Three generations buying into the idea that "what's best for industry and billionaires is best for America" - and that government is our "enemy" rather than something that our nation's founders fought and died to create for all of "We The People" And, increasingly, it's not just the Koch family. The Walton family - whose combined wealth is greater than 40 percent of all Americans - funded a covert campaign to rename the estate tax as the "death tax" and lobbied so hard they got the estate tax eliminated entirely in 2010.
Senator Bernie Sanders pointed out yesterday that - so far - we know of 26 billionaires - worth over $146 billion - who have already "invested" or committed to invest over $561 million dollars in this election cycle - most of it to defeat Democrats who want to raise their taxes. The good news is that young people are waking up and realizing that the Libertarian hustle the billionaires are feeding them is just that - a hustle. Just like Tea Partiers are waking up to their having been had by billionaires who want to privatize their Social Security. Hopefully, soon, America will regain its sanity and we'll go back to viewing cranky billionaires the way my Dad's generation did - as Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower did - when Eisenhower referred to their ilk as "small in number and stupid" They're not stupid any more, and if we really value American traditions, we really must push back on this kind of power and influence in American politics. Go to move to amend.org.

I do hope Thom will be able to cover the convention and bring this information to bear. Until then, the GOP lurkers can read DU and weep bitter tears over having been so thoroughly conned.

(12,272 posts)Thank you for a very informative post. I agree, some very sophisticated manipulation is being perpetrated against the interests of the American people. And the people who are being used to the ends of these manipulators will have hurt themselves as well, imagine the pain to the spirit when and if that is finally realized.
What Hartman says is spot-on. These groups are thrown bones that meet their heart's delight, while the rest of the plan is blurred over with a rosy glow.

(7,402 posts)McCain only said that there was nothing in Romney's tax returns to "disqualify" him as VP. That bar is set so low that even legally paying no federal income taxes for several years would not disqualify him; only be an albatross on the campaign.

(488 posts)Very many other of the Republican loud voices. the most you'll hear is a halfhearted attack on Harry Reid, but virtually never a positive defense of the Mittster and his obscurantism on his tax situation. They know they've got nothing and a nothing presumptive candidate as well. McCain would stand by if he thought doing anything else might cost him an iota of the political capital he thinks he's got built up on his maverick, man of integrity, war hero reputation. Look no further than his reaction, or lack thereof, when Bush/Rove attacked him through his adopted daughter in the South Carolina primary 2000. Been me I'd have looked one of the two up preferably Rove and gelded them.

What is Reince Priebus hiding? The American people have the right to know if Reince Priebus is human or if Reince Priebus is named after a concentration camp guard. Reince Priebus must show the American people his papers. If Reince Priebus can't produce his papers he must be deported.

(39,961 posts)Release the tax records. Then we can all collectively flame Harry Reid.
I'll be the first in line if they show that Romney paid a normal amount of taxes every year for ten years.
Of course, if you have a $100 million IRA, nobody in their right mind believes you paid adequate taxes and kept your returns legitimate.
I don't have to see the returns to know that with a 100 million dollar IRA Romney cheated the system, and likely broke the law.
Only a dumbass would believe that he got that huge of a return in an account that can only allow $6000 a year to bloom into 100,000,000 legitimately. Yes, that many zeroes, and the man hasn't been investing for more than 35 years in it, and before, the allowance for investment were far lower.
It would take a complete ignoramus that hasn't invested in their life to think that you can do these things under the tax code without documentation - and without getting caught. Mitt Romney has gotten caught on this fact alone, and the longer the delay of the tax records, the more he hangs himself with questions about the IRA.

(7,402 posts)The first thing Obama did was to post a copy of his birth certificate. It turned out to be a certified copy and not the original long form that it was produced from. The Republican Governor of Hawaii would not cooperate with Obama's request for a copy of the long form. When a Democrat was elected Governor there was cooperation and Obama produced the long form birth certificate. That is what transparency looks like.
Fast forward to Romney's federal income tax returns. Just the opposite has happened. I had no issue with Obama being asked to produce a copy of his birth certificate since his father was not an American so it was a legitimate question. Obama had nothing to hide so he cooperated all of the way. Obviously, Romney has something to hide otherwise he would have followed the Obama example and released the data. That is what every other candidate for President has done since the 1970's, including Ross Perot who was much more wealthy than Romney. Just release the damn tax returns Romney, like 21 prominent Republicans have called upon Romney to do.
