Families Belong Together March: Who marched today and where?

We were in DC today and I was astounded at the turnout, Sounds like 30-50K -- and I am REALLY cool with that as I am seeing that it looks like the march was millions over the country and the world. It was REALLY hot here in DC and people still showed up -- TONS of preteens and teens with their parents. I talked to a few parents and they told me that it was their kids that wanted to be there.

Many kids insisted on parents showing up.

(Side note, here in DC, there was a trump policy rally -- I was told by a DC Police officer 1600 signed up. They were supposed to march the other way the Families Belong Together March was heading on Pennsylvania Avenue. They are silly people.)

My fave part of the day was being a part of the protesters who surrounded the Department of Justice building.

I had the police give me a warning for turning my back to an anti-abortion bonehead trolling the crowd.

Talked a few of the young men (who seems high school or early college age) to stop engaging the troll to turn their backs as well.

She also has anxiety with big crowds and an HOA that won't permit political signs.

Today, she ran errands with a big 'Families Belong Together' sign in the back wondo of her car,

She got a lot of support from car horns!

20. We just got done here in Fayetteville, AR . Started at 6 PM, partially

because of heat and partially because of the Farmers' Market earlier in the day takes up the whole square. Nice turn out of maybe 700.

21. Rally in San Antonio was maybe 1000 people. Sometimes this city

really disappoints me. There are 1.5 million people here, and only 1000 showed up. Our local news fb post is full of vile, hateful comments. Considering how much of our population and heritage is Mexican, its 😢 sad.

25. On mom approached me on the metro going into DC.

She assumed we were going to the march and wanted to double check where she needed to get off. I told her -- and then I asked her about her three boys (all under 12 years old) and she told me where she lived. (Staunton Virginia)

She said that when her sons heard about the facility holding immigrant children up the road from them, they wanted to protest. She asked if they wanted to go to that actual facility. They did, They made signs and went to protest.


When they heard about the march today, she told me they wanted to go to DC (5 hours away).

They were promised some fun time tomorrow -- she was following her son's lead.

Our booth was popular. Contradicting Gov Huckabee, almost everyone offered to pay (which we couldn't accept and told them to donate to one of the charities working to reunite the families), many asked politely & diffidently if they could have more than one bottle to for their family/friends/pet, and everyone said thank you.

There were about 2000 to 3000 in attendance. The speakers included an excellent presentation by various local Native Peoples' tribes, representatives of our local congress critters, and city and county officials, speakers from Black Lives Matter, a stand of unity by representatives of our various faiths, including a priest, a rabbi, a Buddhist holy man, a woman Pastor of Color with the voice of an Angel, and a Muslim woman speaker who set the crowd on fire! They also acknowledged those among us who are Atheist and Agnostic.
Also represented were local Union people and legal advocates for the undocumented. My apologies to anyone I failed to mention.

Unfortunately I was a long way away from the stage and subsequently got no good pics of the volunteers who gave us information and encouragement.

This is an excellent way to get out our message on local news media to counteract Fox's BS. Show up for a couple of hours and let your voice be heard!

horrified by this...they were holding signs in protest...and coming down on Trump...couple of churches represented. It was cool all walks of life ...from a Gay councilwoman (also a POC) to a Baptist family...now where do you see that?

My mom was supposed to attend with me, but it was really hot. Several speakers, and then a march around the block. Estimates I've seen say it was "hundreds of people". I didn't notice any counter-protesters.

I'm glad I went. It was very uplifting to be surrounded by others who cared.

We had a great turn-out. A rally. And a march. Last week a huge group of young people camped on the parking strip in front of the ICE facility triggering arrests. But still they persist. Last night was filled with the clanging and banging of pots and pans and general noise to remind the incarcerated that they were not alone. Tonight, as they have done for quite some time, the pots and pans brigade meets at the detention center to make noise. We are not okay with this crap in our area. Word is that children taken from the border are being held at another facility nearby.

How I LOVE my state! I was born and raised in Texas but have lived most of my adult life here in L.A. Anyway, it was just wonderful! The local news estimated that the crowd was around 50,000! We couldn't get anywhere near the stage but there was a really good sound system so we heard Kamala, Maxine, Gavin, and John Legend- (among others). John sang the Marvin Gaye song What's going on. His wife, Chrissy Teigen, introduced him and she was great. I've heard of her, and I realize she's famous, but I know very little about her. Well....her introduction was awesome! She said something like. "if you guys read tweets or saw his TMZ video, you know my husband doesn't give a FUCK about Sarah Sander's dinners!" After that he sang. The whole day was wonderful! Being around like minded people feels so comforting and as you can imagine, some of the signs were great.....

One thing I noticed: On a hot, sunny day, all the speakers had a shaded platform, but the ASL interpreters were out there in the bright sunlight. I admired their dedication, and I sought them out afterwards to commend them.

There was a real forest of signs. From where I stood, the interpreters were only intermittently visible. Anyone relying on ASL to follow the action might have been disappointed. Still, at least the effort was made.
