(28,452 posts)In the early days of the Photo Group, we decided to have the images in the monthly polls be anonymous (somewhat - if anyone was really interested they could go to the PG and see who submitted what) because it was thought that people might rally around their favorite DUer/best DU buddy's photo, recruiting people to vote for their buddies. (BITD this was called "rallying the troops." Just wondering when that stopped.
Also, links to the other polls would have been nice in the OP. Is there a 3rd poll for this contest? If so, it's not on the Greatest Page, and GD can be a PITA to navigate. So links to other polls in this contest would have been great.
All bitchy enquiries aside, kudos to all the photographers. As always, you make it hard to choose just one shot!

(22,380 posts)At the advent of DU3 we did not have an ability for polling for about a half a year. Give or take a month. All that time there was no way to do our contests, though we tried to find work-arounds. I know - because I was supposed to be the hostess for the next one.
When they brought back the polling, things had changed for us photographers. Our ability to have anonymous polling was taken away. We were forced to consider the additional work of anonymous submissions to compensate.
Many objections ensued. None were answered, or acknowledged by those who could have programmed the switch to make photo contests anonymous. I bitched. A lot. And, though many others were unhappy, and at least one regular contributor said there would be no more submissions coming, I was the last one standing still complaining about our contribution not being found sufficiently valuable for even looking at our issues of discomfort.
As a matter of fact, I felt encouraged to put on my sheeple suit.
So I did. And I contribute. But the long pause hurt our enthusiasm. We have not had enough entries, and this month was the worst with just 17. The host tried. But you can't make three threads of a contest out of 17 entries.
If I gave you too much information I apologize. But I hope I did answer your questions, and as I'm sure you can tell I am still steaming.

(46,436 posts)A poll should be secret, like a vote.
Mira
(22,380 posts)your own work and your ego is not so involved, which takes a poll between the photographers to a different and uncomfortable level.
Our not being heard and our having been simply ignored on this subject is discounting and insulting.

(28,452 posts)I'd forgotten that you can see who votes for what these days. I've not been as engaged in DU3 as I was in earlier versions and hardly even post any more so many of these types of subtleties are lost on me. Like Blue, I think all the polling should be secret. If full disclosure was such a great idea in a democracy, each individual's vote for president would be public knowledge. Hell, corporations have more privacy rights influencing real life elections than DUers have in any given poll! (Don't get me started!)
What a shame there were only 17 submissions. I used to live in the Photo Group but at some point it seemed to become less about DUers interested in sharing a hobby and more of a professional-quality quality. I hardly even visit any more, and when I do, I hardly recognize any of the names. I think part of my distancing myself from DU had to do with name change amnesty, too, since I could no longer identify many "old friends" once they'd changed their names so it made it less fun to play all around.

(15,812 posts)Not professional quality here, but we have all types, as always. We miss you and I remember you well. You've taken a break. Time to jump back in. Can we hope?

(90,762 posts)I think I'll always be learning and there are some truly great teachers in the group. I miss the "help me choose" threads because I always got great advice and tips.

(15,812 posts)The polling is a separate issue.
I, too, am wondering why our wonderful host put our names on our photos in the OP? I mean, I don't mind, I suppose. But people don't have to go to the trouble of to the photography group to attach names to photos. It is all laid out.....................That is a first as far as I know.
As far as the polling goes, I was adamently opposed to knowing who voted for who. At this point, I don't care, personally, but would prefer anonymous voting for those who care about it. But that doesn't have anything to do with our names being on the photos in the poll. Not sure if that was purposeful or what. I don't care, though
Celebration
(15,812 posts)First, you need to come back and enter some contests! Pretty please?
As far as having the photographer's names on their photos, I have no idea. Maybe our host will answer........... it doesn't have anything to do with the new type of polling.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)since the votes were already transparent anyway.
I guess I don't really care either, but I personally kind of liked the mystery of the totally blind submissions. A little more work for the host, but more interesting and fun, in my opinion. I know Mira disagrees with me on this particular facet of the contests.
Celebration
(15,812 posts)but it is not nearly as big of a deal to me as I thought it would be.
I'd also rather submit blindly............I think the mystery part of it is really fun, too! Totally fun to try to figure out who submits what. I don't think it affects the way I vote, though. But as a host I tried the submitting blindly thing even before the polls were able to be seen. I thought it was a blast--I would love to have more contests run that way--maybe not every contest, but a lot of them.

(8,039 posts)the host answered, he may have just done it not realizing we usually don't add names. I am not sure if he has hosted before but I did leave it as his contest his rules beyond the minimum. I didn't enter because I was having fits with the new Adobe update so spent my computer time trying to get the thing working properly again. Working better than it was but not all back to normal yet though have a feeling I will have to wait until Adobe figures out that 1, it is them and not every other site it works with and 2, they get around to fixing it.
