GOP Rep. Ben Quayle To GOP Opponent: Apologize For Saying I'm Bisexual

GOP Rep. Ben Quayle To GOP Opponent: Apologize For Saying I'm Bisexual

Rep. Ben Quayle (above right) is demanding that his Arizona GOP primary opponent apologize for what Quayle says is an allegation that he is bisexual.

Schweikert's campaign is not backing down from the controversial mailer it issued on Friday, which characterizes Quayle as someone who "goes both ways." The campaign says the wording refers to his flip-flops on important issues. The mail piece was clearly intended to say 'both ways' — taking the liberal and conservative side on issues," said Schweikert campaign spokesman Chris Baker. But the Quayle campaign slammed Schweikert over the mailer, which it says has sexual undertones in its use of a term — going both ways — that normally refers to bisexuality. Though the campaign could not be reached for comment, Quayle spokeswoman Anna Haberlein told the Tucson Citizen that the mailer was a "sleazy smear tactic."

If Schweikert had hinted that Quayle might be gay, it would be pistols at dawn.

I think Schweikert probably meant it the way he says he meant it. Quayle either sincerely believes that Schweikert was implying bisexuality, or he thinks it's politically useful to claim that he was implying it.

If Quayle hadn't couched it in terms of sexuality, a few people might titter at the phrasing, but hardly anyone would be claiming Quayle is bi.
