The Tea Party’s Plan to Cripple Congress

By Margaret Carlson Aug 7, 2012 6:30 PM ET

Wave goodbye to members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Doing nothing has taken a lot out of them, so they have left Washington for five weeks of rest, relaxation and campaigning in the hope that voters will return them to office to do more of the same.

This is especially the case for the large Tea Party contingent among the several score first-term Republicans. They set out to change Washington but settled for simply paralyzing it.

They repealed Obama’s health-care law 33 times but didn’t change one word of its 2,700 or so pages. They stopped the Grand Bargain over the debt and deficit even at the cost of exposing Speaker John Boehner as a scaredy cat. They haven’t been able to curb the excesses of Wall Street, keep the debt ceiling from rising, or end government subsidies to NPR or Amtrak -- but by God, they can bring the capital to its knees. Nearly everyone hates Congress (well, about 80 percent of Americans do) yet the Tea Party -- fortified by Sarah Palin, Senator Jim DeMint and the Club for Growth -- is about to do for the Senate what it did to the House.

Look at what has happened so far in the Republican primaries: Only the purest, most virginal conservatives are being chosen as the party’s standard bearers in November.

I just love the names of these far right wing organizations. Like calling a crocodile a "pretty pink kitty".

"Only the purest, most virginal conservatives are being chosen as the party’s standard bearers in November." That one's hard to swallow. It seems to me that only the most vile and whorish of conservatives will be bearing the standard of the Republican Party during this election cycle.

They vote in imbeciles and then complain that imbeciles are running the government.

They've been openly damaging our government and it only seems to encourage them to damage it more.

How bad do things have to get before it dawns on our great unwashed that it's this bizarre tea people philosophy that is bringing us down?

I fear things will become much worse before they get better again.

5. It will take the passing of an entire generation, and maybe even that is not enough

Nixon's southern strategy come home to roost two generations later. From what I've seen most teabaggers are of the Korean War Vet era, come into their adulthood in the 50's, maybe early 60's. They are getting old now and things won't get much better until they are gone. By the way, I say that as someone who is just about that age myself.

6. Republicans complain that government does nothing right in order to get elected

so they can prove it! It never ceases to amaze me that so many people are able to be elected to run government by spending their entire campaign badmouthing it. What's worse is when they run for office saying- often quite clearly- that they PLAN on obstructing government and essentially that they don't plan on doing their jobs- yet they too often wind up elected. The American public- the ones that vote anyway- amazingly have no problems tolerating behavior from our "employees" that we know our own employers would NEVER tolerate from us on our job.

And I have no hope that will happen. Propaganda works, unfortunately.
