When the people say they are unhappy with the direction of the country but still favor the incumbent President over the challenger by a 6 point advantage, it can mean only one thing: The GOP in Congress in fucking up. I don't draw this conclusion from a single poll, instead, looking at a single poll to understand what it is the people are saying, especially when more and more polls produce seemingly contradictory results. In the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, one apparent contradiction is that only 31% say the country is headed in the right direction, yet Obama leads Romney 49-43.
From the article, an even more damning point for Mr. Romney:
The poll indicated that 46 percent of registered voters thought Obama was stronger on jobs and the economy, compared with 44 percent for Romney. And on tax matters, 49 percent saw Obama as stronger, compared with 38 percent for Romney.
This is not the first poll to reveal such a shift in internals. It won't be the last.
Of the 69% of the people who don't agree the country is headed in the right direction, many more of them prefer Obama's solutions than what Romney proposes. It could mean that Romney's campaign is incompetent, which I am believing more and more each day. It could also mean the GOP in Congress is acting against the people's wishes when they block important legislation like the Jobs Act, Obama's Tax Cut Extension for the Middle Class and Economic Stimulus packages. I think this latter hypothesis has more merit, if not congruently being true with the former. The people do not support the obstructionism of the GOP and that is starting to show in the polls. If the GOP keeps catering to the Tea Party in this way, they will surely head down the path of a self-destructive implosion.
So, to the GOP, and while I will point this out, I know many old-time, traditional Republicans painfully know this already, I would point out that you are doing it wrong. The people don't like what you are doing. Stop listening to the Tea Party. They are the fringe and you are letting them run a mock with insanity. Stop punishing your members of Congress for reaching across the isle to do the business of the American people. If you fail to see what you are doing is wrong, when the American people turn against you, as they surely will, don't say you weren't warned.
