Feds investigating Lawnwood Regional for possibly performing unnecessary heart procedures

The Civil Division of the U.S. attorney's office in Miami is looking into HCA, the parent company of Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, about the necessity of certain cardiology services, according to the company's quarterly report filed Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to The New York Times article published late Monday, a former nurse at Lawnwood, C.T. Tomlinson, said a doctor at the hospital had been performing unnecessary heart procedures on patients. According to a confidential memo written by Stephen Johnson, a company ethics officer, and reviewed by The New York Times, HCA had concluded the nurse was right.
