What is the collective "General Knowledge" of Americans?

Yesterday, I created a thread--a VERY poor attempt to try satire like Jonathan Swift did when he suggested Irish poor use their children for food.

http://www.art-bin.com/art/omodest.html

My reason for writing this thread was my fustration at the right wing and Gabby isn't patriotic because she doesn't wear American Flag outfits. And it just isn't Gabby I've heard wingers in my town complaining about athletes not being patriotic enough. Forget the fact these young people are competeing not just for a piece of precious medal BUT honor for their country be they draped in the flag or not.

I expected people to chew me out for my lame attempt at trying to write like jonathan Swift but people took me way too seriously.

So is it so wrong of me to expect people to have common knowledge of Plato, Mark Twain and Jonathan Swift?

Is it so wrong to expect the general public to have general knowledge of American and World history and not the freakin history of Real House wives of _______.

I by no means am smart but it blows my mind that people I talk to look at me like I'm growing a second head because I do quote Plato or shakespear or Dolly Madison.

So do I give up and learn to talk in the language of Real housewives and survivor? After all my friend was telling me earlier this afternoon that she was hoping to get a job at a store and found out she didn't get it. She was further shocked when her aunt who worked at the store yelled at her for using her arrogant college education which got made her lose out on the job.

Or have I offened people asking this question.

TL/DR = "too long, didn't read"

(But of course I read it, and agree with your premise.)

its okay to use an occasional quote but anyone who thinks that continually quoting dead dudes makes them look smart is on to a hiding.
