Shuster: "Whining about negative ads can make you sound weak, fragile and desperate."
Remind Mitt again that there's no whining in politics
During the Republican primaries, Romney and his super PAC eviscerated GOP primary opponents with a relentless barrage of negative and often misleading ads.
This one, before the Iowa caucuses, hammered Newt Gingrich for all of his "baggage" going into the race. It ripped Gingrich for everything from taking money from Freddie Mac to teaming up with Nancy Pelosi on global warming legislation to supporting taxpayer-funded abortions.
The ad also calls Newt a "half-baked" conservative.

In fact, Romney and his super PAC ran nearly five times as many negative ads during the primaries as the campaigns and super PACs of Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Ron Paul combined. It wasnt even close to a fair fight. Romney crushed his opponents on the airwaves, reminding everybody that negative ads work.
Meanwhile, independent fact-checking groups have been describing these latest Romney ads as misleading and false. Has Romney pulled the spots? Of course not. Politics is a rough business. Its particularly rough when you are losing and your unfavorable ratings are going up, as the latest polling has found.

Romney needs to be especially careful, though. Whining about negative ads can make you sound weak, fragile and desperate. And its hard to climb back into a race when those perceptions begin to stick. Just ask Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum."
