The age group that Obama has the lowest support in DISAPPROVES strongly of the Ryan plan, to the tune of 74%. And Conservative Elderly DISAPPROVE at the level of 54%.
From Politico: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/79607.html
In the same month, a Pew Research Center poll found that 41 percent of Americans opposed turning Medicare into a voucher system, akin to Ryans plan, although 23 percent had no opinion. That poll also found that a majority of older Americans, 51 percent, opposed the idea. When Pew drilled down, it found that voters preferred Democrats handling of Medicare over Republicans by 10 points 44 to 34 percent.
Choosing Ryan could be a game changer all right: by bringing more elderly into the Obama camp.

(996 posts)The Romney/Ryan plan (since they now own it) appeals to those folks; by not changing benefits for those currently or soon to be receiving them, it tries to pander to the type of people who are only concerned about themselves. When the Romney/Ryan plan first came out, I thought that the Democrats should urge them to go all the way: make it apply to everyone, even those currently on Medicare. It would either wedge seniors away from the GOP or make the GOP explain why they are pandering and possibly even defend Medicare as it currently is.

Interesting problem. Their votes are of equal value to ours but they cannot vote without assistance.

Who fills it out?
And, should it even be encouraged if they don't explicitly ask to vote.
Moral dilemma.
Both of us agreed reluctantly that we shouldn't prevent their vote from counting.
Her dad was always a total RW asshole.
And argument could be made that he's incompetent to vote.

We ought to re-frame any attempts to establish a voucher program by calling it what it is: rationing, limiting access.

(26,549 posts)Under a rationing scheme, you could theoretically still receive care if your case became severe enough.
Under the proposed voucher scheme, they will never pay enough to cover your costs. By design.

(25,111 posts)giving a $15,000 - $20,000 voucher for medical expenses to seniors. Shit that amount would only cover about 2 months of medical services and Rx expenses, especially with the high costs of health-care. Also, can you image all the vultures and predators that will be after those monies? Now, after several months, that amount has been exhausted, so then what? Family, friends and churches and charitable associations will have to make up the difference, but in the meantime, the 1-2% gets even richer.

They might be the exception, but if there wasn't the safety net in place, they'd either sit on the curb to die or end up costing us more money in medical costs indirectly.
I am just devastated that people like Ryan are so cold and mean.

(30,058 posts)And why should everyone be overjoyed with Ryan's budget cuts to medicare, etc, why to give more tax breaks to the likes of Rmoney who probably does not pay taxes to begin with. Rmoney is ashamed of the amount of taxes he does not pay and only will prove the point the 10% does not pay taxes but the lower income is floating the beast at the top. Get out and vote, it is imperative. It should be about the real issues, no taxes at the top and quit worrying about the social issues like gay rights, abortion, etc which is allowing crazy people to win elections and holding up job programs.

(15,139 posts)this plan either has a couple million bucks safely tucked away or simply doesn't understand the details. This is pure and simple abandonment of the people by the government. These bugs deserved to be squashed in November in a manner that sends a clear message that this plan is shit the American people simply won't eat.

(50 posts)is beyond me. While it is an obvious attempt to appeal to the extreme right wing, that segment of the voting base is not in itself large enough to guarantee election. By alienating yet another group, Romney has merely dug himself deeper into the hole that he has been digging since the day he became the presumptive GOP candidate.

GOP Chairman: Romney Is Not Ready To Lead on Day One Without Ryan
Appearing on Meet The Press on Sunday, Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus admitted that
Romney would only be ready to lead "on day one" with Vice Presidential candidate
Paul Ryan (R-WI) by his side. "Combined, these guys are ready on day one," he
said, suggesting that without Ryan, Romney would not be prepared to assume the
responsibilities of the office on day one.

(11,084 posts)Romney has a pretty sizable lead in Arizona. Probably won't cost him that state. But Florida slightly favors Obama. Ryan's negatives with seniors could make Florida lean more strongly toward Obama. That's 29 electoral votes right there. Thank you, Congressman Ryan.
