Therefore he shouldn't be "proud" of his heritage. He should be grateful we even let him on our Olympic team and not bring attention to the fact that he's NOT lily white. I guarantee you this is the thinking.

He was there representing the USA.
I think he knows that now, and he apologized.
Outraged? No.
Uncomfortable? Yes.
But then again, there have been other breaches of decorum. And eventually we have come to understand them and accept them...
