If you're a Republican Senator, I guess you would have to be near death to vote your conscience.

Jeff Flake has been made a fool of by his own party and the President. Susan Collins is going to be primaried anyway by some right wing nutcase (like the Governor) no matter how she votes. Murkowski probably will lose her Energy Committee chairmanship which she may feel will hurt her state, but by voting for Kav, she will hurt women and native Alaskans. Of the three, Flake has the least to lose politically but with all three, it comes down to decency and conscience.

7. We are assuming...........

(and we all know what it means to assume - and it is SO true in this case) that a Republican EVEN has a conscience.
There is NO way any sane person with a conscience would be involved with a party that is led by IQ45, McTurtle, Cubby Ryan, and includes people like Grassley, Graham, Cruz, Gohmert, Santorum, Pence, et al.
They don't have a conscience - they don't even have a soul!

PS: Welcome, Leo2!!

8. LePage said he didn't want to run for senate

At least that's what he has said most recently. I think he is angling to work for the Trump admin after he gets done at the end of January. One good thing is if for some reason LePage or some other extreme conservative gets the nomination to run for the senate seat in 2020, they probably won't win the general election. This is because we have a new voting system for electing US senators and reps, Ranked Choice Voting. In Maine, we pretty much always have at least one independent in the race. Often it is two independents and sometimes more. Anyhow, with RCV, we rank the candidates as 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice, etc. To win, a candidate needs to get 50% of the vote. If no one has 50% with the first choice votes, then the person in last place in thrown out of the race and the people that voted for them as their 1st choice have their 2nd choice votes distributed among the remaining candidates. It is called an instant run off. Basically, this sort of system will make it difficult for the extremists to get elected because they don't appeal to at least 50% of the voters. LePage has never received 50% of the vote. He got in initially with 38% of the vote.

9. Yeah, you are right though. Repubs will probably nominate a nutjob the next time around over Collins

I think that Collins best move is to vote like the majority of her constituents want her to and that is to vote against Kav. The reason being is that if Collins does that and continues to vote the way the majority of Mainers want for the next two years, she has a very strong chance of winning re-election as an independent.
