1) Campaign donations
Even though Rmoney is frequently assumed to come out on top of the money race, this could change overnight if current poll trends continue (and there's no reason to expect they won't). I think it's also pretty likely that Rmoney's major donors are making increasing demands that he release his tax records, which he obviously can't do. Selecting Paul Ryan gives Rmoney access to teahadist money like the Kock bros, and other far right wing donors that want to see a teahadist VP. These people will continue to fund Rmoney even if he is a sure loser come October simply to try to make Ryan a viable candidate for 2016 and beyond.
2) Pandering to the wingnuts
The hard core wingnuts are becoming more and more disillusioned with Rmoney. If they simply decide to stay home in November it would be a disaster not just for Rmoney, but for the GOP congressional races as well.
3) Avoiding a convention disaster
With a moderate VP, there would be a good chance the teabaggers would make a run for a brokered convention. Even a serious attempt would be disastrous for Rmoney. Paul Ryan as VP negates this.
None of these three things have very much to do with winning but rather point to the desperation of the Rmoney campaign that is facing the possibility of not just losing, but getting seriously embarrassed which would have disastrous consequences for the entire GOP.

(17,064 posts)It boils down to the Ryan pick being a desparation move by Romney and the GOP.

(34,661 posts)namely the neo-cons and Chamber of Commerce put this P.O.S. ticket together. Folks, this is double your bets time for the moneyed elitist. Questions to be asked, were and what was Vin Weber,Norm(I'am a fake)Coleman and the rest of the Heritage crowds input and grandiose promises or guaranties for Rmoney. Can you vision the look on Tim(the fake)Palenty's face when he meets his buddies from Minnesota. Thankfully,Timmy's spouses Judgeship appointment won't be out in the public media. Choke-choke,I mean Koch-Kock!!!!

(9,259 posts)It's going to get interesting.
If Romney had chosen someone "inoffensive" like Pawlenty or Portman (which was my guess) the Party would have instantly blamed the loss on Romney not being a "true conservative". Now that's off the table, who or what will they blame now? A ticket so far to the right it fell into the Pacific Ocean? Nah.
