Poll: Paul Ryan's early numbers worst since Dan Quayle

Mitt Romney picking Paul Ryan as his running mate may have sparked new interest in his campaign and invigorated the Republican base, but more Americans than not have a less-than-stellar opinion of the Wisconsin congressman.

A new USA Today/Gallup Poll found that 42% see Ryan as a “fair” or “poor” choice, compared with 39% who rate him as “pretty good” or “excellent.”

The only vice presidential nominee who has polled worse following their introduction to the public is Dan Quayle, who in 1988 was seen as “fair” or “poor” by 52% of Americans.

PHOTOS: Paul Ryan's past

Seventeen percent of adults say that Ryan’s candidacy makes them more likely to vote for Romney, slightly less than 18% of Americans who said the same for John McCain following Sarah Palin’s vice presidential nomination in 2008. Thirty-six percent of Republicans polled are more likely to vote for Romney following the Ryan unveiling though, 6 points greater than the Palin boost for McCain in 2008.

Went to vote that year at our local school and had our daughter, then 2, with us. Waiting quietly in line she says "George Bush is a jerk!" thankfully everybody laughed. Yes she learned that at home!
She's a good Democrat now.

The whole idea in winning those governorships all along was to rig the apparatus for this election. Obama will have an uphill fight no matter how many people come out to vote for him. The DoJ better be on its toes right now! Election Day will be too late to cry foul.

Why isn't Obama making a public case against disenfranchisement??? Why didn't anybody in Wisconsin after the last two off-year elections that clearly were rigged? Too freaking patient the Demicratic party!

Dukakis was hurt when people didn't find his answer emotional enough when asked about his wife being raped or murdered or something like that.

Much like they did to Kerry. The MSM couldn't get over that Reagan era ended badly just as they couldn't believe Bushes first term was terrible. They carried Bushes water like no ones business and savaged Dukakis's wife, blamed him for things totally uncontrollable, and never ever brought up Iran Contra...

Much like the 2004 election about two years after the election no one wanted the "winner" anymore.

but his response wasn't considered emotional enough . and he had been attacked with the whole willie horton and being soft on crime thing so that stuck out.

Isn't he? He really should find a country perfectly suited to his lack of quality decision making. I'm sure there are other countries he'd fit in better.

Oh I know just the country Amercia. They're probably going nuts over this decision in Amercia.

The GOP was much more moderate back then as well.

Comparing the extremism of Ryan with the basic incompetence of Quayle is apples and oranges.

Quayle was young at the time and any competent GOP politician in his shoes would have been set up for a promising presidential run when his turn came around. The general public quickly dismissed Quayle as a candidate and Quayle jokes went viral before there was an internet. That is how incompetent he was perceived to be.

Ryan is a different animal. He brings a very scary brand of political philosophy to the table. He isn't a man that will be laughed at. He is a man that will be feared. The negatives for Ryan are much worse than the negatives were for Quayle. Back then, folks didn't expect radical change when the GOP came in to power. Now they do.

19. The worst thing about Ryan ...
Mon Aug 13, 2012, 06:24 PM
Aug 2012

... is the way the mainstream media treats him like a reasonable man. This morning's Washington Post referred to him in the lede as "deficit hawk" Paul Ryan. Ain't it grand how you can still spend money on massive tax cuts for the rich and be considered a deficit hawk?
