My 82 year old dad is Democratic, crazy, and pretty cool.

My parents, both of whom are still alive and reasonably healthy, thankfully, live in a real small Midwestern town on the banks of the great Mississippi River. And every year this town has a festival in conjunction with another small town right across the river. There is the requisite carnival, live bands, and of course, a parade. Now the parade is nothing special, just an ordinary small town parade with floats and a marching band or two, and of course, politicians.
My dad and brother in law were sitting out on the edge of the driveway at parent's house so they could catch candy and tshirts stuff thrown toward them, (yeah right and get an up close view. Anyway, when the Scott County Democrats marched by, dad stood and hooted and hollered. That is not easy for him because as mentioned, he's old and has had three knee operations, among other things. But when the repukes went by, he stood up, turned his back, and pulled his cap down over his face. He stayed like that until they were well past his house. So while dear ol' dad may not have the mental capacities he once had, he still has enough to recognize that repukes are just no good.
My old man. Think I'll keep him!

Mom and Dad cancel each other out. The kids are liberal though (the 3 of us)

My dad instilled actual values into us, knowing right from wrong and all that stuff. And he walks the religious walk as well. He says he's going to help poor people, he does it.

He had the same spirit of a life long Kennedy Democratic union member.
In his waning years I'd keep his vital signs up by discussing the Ravages of Reaganism.

My parents house is about a mile up the hill from the river. The town itself is a river town. But that's mere details. Our dads are pretty good old guys. Glad to hear that your dad is 92 and has his mental faculties. Sounds like a tough old bird.

provide him with his Social Security check and Medicare. Too many seniors have amnesia when it comes to those truths.

My mom has always been a staunch Dem, too. Went door to door for Adlai Stevenson back in the 50's in a very R neighborhood. My dad passed away 3 years ago. Cast his last Presidential vote for Obama. Wouldn't vote for an R ever.

Your dad, does indeed, sound like a cool guy! You're lucky!!

your dad MOONED the Repukes as they passed.

My 91 year-old dad who lives with me seems to be getting more liberal the older he gets. Not a day goes by when we don't discuss politics. His only shortfall is he thinks Tom Friedman has something to say.

But people who have lived as long as our parents understand how far we have come in establishing and maintaining social safety nets. They want the same for us and their great grandchildren and grandchildren. And who can blame them?

Here's a to your dad.

Then again people from that generation are more civil and pleasant then most of the younger generations now (I'm not saying everyone is a meanie, just that there are more of them). We can learn a lot from that generation, they went through so many hardships.

after having a run-in with another 80-something republican jerk. We weren't even talking politics but he was still a hateful bitter jerk. Are they born rude or do they just get that way after being raised by spiteful parents?

My dad was like that, too. He was a public school teacher in an inner-city school system. After he retired, he was a volunteer with AARP and did a LOT of work on seniors' health care. I just lost him back at the end of June. Please give your old man a hug for me, since I can't hug mine anymore.

Anyone who was, or is, a public school teacher in an inner city school system is ok in my book. My dad was a "mere" factory worker but he used to be real active in both Democratic politics and organized labor. And he passed that along to my sister and I. And I'm glad he did.
