Ryan's love of Ayn Rand - just spent some time reading about Rand....makes no sense.

I just went through the Wikipedia entry on Ayn Rand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayn_rand ....since I've not read any Rand (and my views are probably 180 degrees different), this was pretty enlightening - then I came to this:

"Ryan is an outspoken supporter of Rand and her work, saying that "The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand".

But then we read this - "The political figures who cite Rand as an influence are most often members of the United States Republican Party despite Rand being a pro-choice atheist."

And this - "In ethics, Rand argued for rational egoism (rational self-interest), as the guiding moral principle. She said the individual should "exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself."

Maybe a hint is here - "For example, Mother Jones remarked that "Rand's particular genius has always been her ability to turn upside down traditional hierarchies and recast the wealthy, the talented, and the powerful as the oppressed"

So - Ryan claimed to be Christian, pro-life, and likes public service. But Rand is anti-religion, supports abortion, and I suspect, would view public service as a form of altruism.....

So it's all gotta be a smokescreen - or just cognitive dissonance....and as always, the answer must be whatever leads to money and power.

I guess?!?!?!

To me, the existence of social safety nets is part of a rational self-interest, as I believe a society with safety nets will be healthier and more stable.

Except the sin of having compassion for your fellow humans.
