Advisers to President Trump say Joe Biden is the Democrat he most fears running against, and that Pennsylvania is the state he worries most about flipping against him.
Trumps calculation is based partly on how weak he sees other Democratic possibilities, including Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, and partly on whos capable of appealing to his base of working class whites.
Biden, sources tell me, doesn't think Trump is morally or politically fit for the Oval Office.
The former vice president, who at 75 is three years older than Trump, pines to run and will test the waters this fall.
But family considerations could prevent him from ultimately pulling the trigger. Biden sees the same opening Trump does with working class voters, especially in Democratic states like Pennsylvania that Trump won.
Trump advisers say Biden, like the president, conveys authenticity, is comfortable in his own skin, can work a crowd, and relishes throwing and returning punches.
Biden could and would needle Trump, and get under his skin, with a brio that few other big-name Democrats could muster.
He has kept his connection to his birthplace Scranton, Pa., emblematic of the working-class, Rust Belt territory that joined Trump Country in 2016.
A Democratic source close to Biden said he'd be strong with "Obama-Trump voters" in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin where "the blue wall became the red threat" Obama won them twice, then they flipped narrowly to Trump.

(6,110 posts)Since I do not trust Trump on much of anything, I really don't know if Trump is right.
However I can say that Biden will make Trump look like an idiot in debates.

(12,344 posts)If somebody Biden-like but younger runs, I'll be happy, but we need that kind of personality. Also, I hate to say it, but we need a white male. Trump will use .gender and race to his advantage, as he did in 2016.

(10,173 posts)I didn't care for his shouting match with Trump about who would beat up the other behind a gym..
But I am really studying the importance of contrast. Who personifies the opposite of Trump?- Not who wants to be like him or borrows his rhetoric and demeanour in some respects, but who is almost the opposite to him in every way.
We'll see how it shapes up. It's far too early to make a sure guess what 2019 will look like.

(56,828 posts)he's got the ability to really come up with great one liners that will tear down Trump and get under his skin.
However, he's going to have to come up with an apology and an explanation for what happened with Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas 27 years ago.

(3,335 posts)That's why we Democrats lose. There's always someone who can't bury the past. Who can't let sleeping dogs lie! Personally, I love Joe, and if Biden turns out to be our party's nominee, I'll back him 100%. However, I think that at Biden's current age, he would be too old to run for, and to take on the responsibilities of the office of the President. I say this because every presidency has aged the incumbent beyond his years spent there, and it will age Biden as well. We saw how much it aged President Obama, and he was a much younger man to begin with. The only person it hasn't aged is Trump and that's because he was old as dirt when he came into office, and he didn't do shit before he ran, and he doesn't do shit now as POTUS but run around the country holding rallies to get the much needed adulation his ego feeds on. He didn't know shit from shinola when he entered the White House, and he hasn't tried to learn anything since being there. He's just there to try and make as much money off the presidency as he can.

(56,828 posts)I've heard it mentioned numerous times that Anita Hill would be an issue if it came up for Biden. Remember, Bill Clinton cheating on Hillary was an issue for Hillary, but Trump cheating numerous times on all his wives was not.
And, Joe has also been accused of being a bit touchy/feely like Al Franken in the past as well.
I agree on his age - Democrats have done best with young, smart and charismatic candidates (i.e., Biden in 1988) - JFK, Bill Clinton, Obama.

(11,686 posts)I love warren but I hate to put it this way but at this time she is to liberal. Do not get me wrong, I love libral but with what the moods are in politics we need someone who is closer to the middle. I think Biden would be wonderful ( in some small sense we would have a little bit of Obama back. )

(50,269 posts)Against any other person than Trump, I'd say definitely not. If he happens to end up on the top of heap, he'd be wise to choose a woman running mate. Elizabeth Warren is as widely popular as Bernie was and would relish tearing Orange Don apart. Biden and Warren would make an interesting team. Another reason to pick Warren is the shift to the left over recent years, especially among young voters. It would balance out Joe who is more traditionally centrist.
