New Romney claim: Mitt's Medicare plan is 'very different' than Ryan's
by Jed Lewison
CNN's Soledad O'Brien did a great job in her interview with Mitt Romney surrogate John Sununu this morning, in the process giving us a glimpse at just how uncomfortable Romney's campaign must be now that they have to defend the Romney-Ryan plan to end Medicare. Sununu spent much of the interview badgering O'Brien, accusing her of being a tool of the Obama campaign, but when she fought backwith facts, not insultsthe only thing Sununu could do was claim that Ryan's Medicare plan is "very different" the Romney plan.
But despite his claim, the only difference cited by Sununu wasn't actually part of the Medicare plan. He said that unlike Ryan's budget plan, Romney would repeal Medicare savings signed into law by President Obama. But those savings are actually a good thing; they lower the cost of Medicare without touching benefits. And the only reason they aren't in the Romney budget plan is that Romney's budget plan has almost no details.
So, despite Sununu's claim, there is really basically no difference between what Ryan and Romney are proposing for the future of Medicare. The fact that Sununu would nonetheless claim that the plans are "very different" tells you everything you need to know about how afraid Republicans are of defending the Romney-Ryan plan on its merits.

(10,495 posts)til we are blue in the face. They scare us enough on the right to feel relief when it does not go, "that far." They gradually have gotten most of what they want. They own most of the pols, Courts, media, everything. Big people do not get prosecuted and yet we have to give up our basic rights (warrantless wiretapping, NSA monitoring EVERYTHING, including this post now that I mentioned them, torture...). Please wake up and understand, most Democratic politicians on the National level are bought just like the Republicans. Do you honestly believe that Democrats have congenital defects in their spine and that is why they cannot show backbone? We got a glimpse today behind the curtain, literally, when Bill "Freakin" Clinton was taped back stage talking to Paul "FU" Ryan and telling him that although they have to fight in the election, they would agree to cut all of the social programs. Ryan agreed and told Clinton to give him a call as he walked on stage. This is like a play put on for us and we are the little kid who thinks this is all real. If the politician does not play ball, they get a well funded opponent in the next primary. If they are honest, they are not allowed to stay. It is now to the point that billionaires are picking the VP running mate for the Repug Pres candidate. The Koch suckers told Romney his VP was Ryan, check it out! If we cannot acknowledge the real problem, that our government suffers from a fatal dose of corruption, we will never solve anything and we will continue to slide ever faster to extinction! We need real and complete campaign finance reform and the only way to get it is for enough people to recognize that most of our problems stem from from this legalized (and sometimes not so legal) bribery (campaign contributions) and intimidation.

(224 posts)That's pretty much how the cable news discussion goes.
So while he's reporting news about both sides, the partisan viewers can hate him one day, love him the next, etc. But they always know where to get the things they want to hear -- Fox or MSNBC, respectively. For the life of me, I don't know why any viewer is content with being fed news they KNOW is spun to fit their interest. Bizarre.
lightcameron

whathehell
(29,067 posts)but it's sad if you think CNN doesn't lean Right.
lightcameron
(224 posts)Which means they're hated by each party's extreme partisans.
That says a lot.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)you'll have a difficult time persuading most here, although I think most
will admit they're less to the right than FOX, which is why you have people like Soledad O'Brien.
MSNBC becomes partisan in the evening, but unlike FOX, for instance,
with their "fair and balanced" BS, they cheerfully admit it.
In the daytime, MSNBC is much less so...Tamron Hall and Andrea Mitchell
are not partisan, and one of their new daytime shows,
"The Circle", for instance is co-hosted by admitted conservative, S.E. Cupp.
As for CNN, you must know that Candy Crowley is Republican
as is, I believe, former AIPAC lobbyist, Wolf Blitzer....I'm more confident
of Crowley's leanings, but Blitzer DEFINITELY leans Right.
lightcameron
(224 posts)The Cycle is hosted by four people. One is a rightie.
I don't watch Mitchell, after seeing her bungle too many stories. She sucks. Don't know much about Tamron Hall.
Blitzer and Crowley are constantly lambasted by right-wingers. Once again, hated by the left, hated by the right, probably in the middle somewhere. I'm not a big fan of either of them, to be frank.
I hate cheerleading masked as news, which is why Fox and MSNBC are so laughable.
As I said in another post, it's no coincidence that right wingers are drawn to Fox and liberals are drawn to MSNBC. If someone can't figure out what that's all about, I'm not sure anything will help.
karynnj
(59,503 posts)then saw her AWFUL coverage of John Kerry in 2004 would know that she is both Republican and unable to hide her affiliation. Blitzer was a neocon and was joyful when his buddy Cheney became the VP in 2000.
I would love to have a more objective less partisan media, but it seems that the business models on cable lead to most people being one side of the other. This has aggravated the partisanness of the country.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)She, like the other repukes, made a big deal of Kerry's supposed "elitism"
reflected, in their view, by things like ordering green tea in a restaurant
and windsurfing, but are now strangely silent on Mitt's "dressage" horse
and car elevator....The hypocrisy couldn't be clearer.
karynnj
(59,503 posts)Kerry had been there before and he asked for green tea, which was on the menu. The waitress asked if Lipton (and yes Lipton has green tea) was ok. Kerry said yes - and was brought Lipton green tea.
What this indicates is elitism - on Crowley's part - thinking a provincial town in Iowa could not have green tea - much too sophisticted for them! Even if the story were what Crowley thought it was - Kerry asked and then politely accepted what was offered. There is still no story here.
Not to mention, Crowley told this story from the primaries after Kerry lost as an explanation of why he lost. But, the fact is that the facts do not support that. Kerry won Iowa because people did connect with him when he met them in small groups. As to the various wiatresses and other service people he met, Kerry easily won a poll of people in these professions that was done for decades during the primaries. He was polite, respectful and interested in what they had to say. (Not to mention, he would never have had the poor taste to pull the Romney trick of reacting as if one of them had touched him.)
whathehell
(29,067 posts)I didn't know about her getting it wrong, but I remember thinking what a petty and
lame example of "elitism" it was...I never watch her anymore, but I'd LOVE
to hear how she describes Mitt, who clearly, is not only "elitist", but down right
RUDE, as his insult to the cookies the hosts from Pittsburgh served him showed.
Since then, it's become clear, that he can't open his mouth without insulting someone.
I honestly think there's something psychologically "off", about him that goes beyond the usual explanations
of "money and privilege", but I guess that's another conversation.
Thanks for that information about Kerry and Crowley. Her absolute partisanship
became clear to me a few months ago, when she opened her show with some
discussion on "entitlements" and with it, described Social Security and Medicare
as "popular but unsustainable programs"...She didn't question it's "sustainability"
She stated it's non-sustainability as FACT...She may have thought that delivering that "pronouncement"
quickly and with a broad smile as she did , would take the edge off its partisan arrogance, but it
didn't work on this viewer, and I doubt it worked on others. I stopped watching her
after that, and only tuned in last week because she was interviewing David Axelrod,
who handled her well, even calling her out for showing him PART of a poll, but not all.
lightcameron
(224 posts)There's no accounting for opinion.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)including CSPAN, is corporate-owned, and therefor "right leaning, you are on your way to understanding that there is NO truly unbiased
corporate owned news in the nation...It's one of the reasons the Internet is so heavily "prized"
by those seeking corporate-free news.
You say that you think Blitzer and Crowley are "in the middle somewhere"
and that MIGHT be true when if you realize that what's considered the "middle" now,
was "Right" not long ago, and what is "Right" is now ""Fascist to Nazi".
I don't know how old you are, but anyone over the age of forty five or fifty
can tell you how FAR to the Right this country has gone and in not that long a time.
As Libertarian Bill Maher put it: "The Democrats have moved to the Right and
the Right has moved to the Mental Hospital". If you're too young to remember
any president before Clinton, or even Reagan, you may have a hard time realizing what
real Democratic policy looked like.
As to the news, you may "hate cheer leading masked as news", but if you didn't start watching the news
until AFTER the 1980's, it's unlikely you would RECOGNIZE it if you saw it.
I would suggest you research something called The Fairness Doctrine...It was law in this country
from about 1936 until about the middle 1980's during the Reagan Administration.
That was probably the last time you could get reasonably close to "real" or "objective"
news, although as anyone who's been to college or has studied media will know,
there is really no "purely" objective political news because there are no "purely" objective human beings.
We all have biases -- All of us.
MSNBC is something of an exception, and that's only because the station, as a profit-driven entity,
just wanted to tap the "untapped" left-leaning market, but even their anchors aren't permitted
to discuss "everything".
lightcameron
(224 posts)Very true.
And that includes viewers.
One aspect of the media bias discussion that is all too easily forgotten is that you have to factor in the bias of the viewer as well. To someone far right like Newt Gingrich, Anderson Cooper looks like a liberal. To someone far left like Katrina vanden Heuvel, Anderson Cooper looks like a right-wing tool. So...who's correct? (Leaving aside for the moment that the two people in my example are perpetually angry and miserable.) And, by the way, the bias of the consumer/viewer is what made the Fairness Doctrine such a bad idea.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)It's you I'm unsure of.
Let's get this straight: You don't like "biased" news, but you thought
the Fairness Doctrine was a "bad idea".
How then, would you propose we "improve" the situation?
Skittles
(153,150 posts)CNN very often emulates FOX news in its quest for the idiot viewer - they are alienating a lot of us THINKING viewers
lightcameron
(224 posts)I surrender.
Atman
(31,464 posts)CNN is leans very far right, after a concerted effort to emulate Fox in an attempt to staunch their hemmoraging ratings. After that strategy only made things worse, they decided to reformat their mornings to compete with F&F and Joe -- enter Soledad OBrien. She is good, her new show is probably the only watchable thing on CNN. But CNN is still right-wing.
Fox is a purely, unabashedly, 100% partner in the Republican party.
MSNBC is NOT just a left-wing Fox. MSNBC devotes all morning and most of it daytime to righties. A small peppering of liberal politics is allowed, but it's otherwise right-wing until Al Sharpton begins their prime-time liberal-leaning shows (No, that doesn't start with Chris Matthews; he leans toward whichever party is in the White House.
Can you name any 6-hour portion of Fox's programming devoted to liberal politics? Of course not. Obviously, by any objective measure, MSNBC is far more "Fair and balanced" than Fox has ever been.
lightcameron
(224 posts)Martin Bashir leans right? I don't know who else they have on in the afternoons, but I've dipped in and viewed enough to know the answer to those questions. As an avid viewer, I'm sure you do too.
I don't think MSNBC has anyone as annoying as Bill O'Reilly, so Fox takes the lead there. But the two channels clearly are designed to appeal to the two different ideological bases.
I think MSNBC probably has gone up a notch or two, after sending Olbermann to Current, who set him up for his new job of arguing with people on Twitter.
Atman
(31,464 posts)I had forgotten about Alex Wagner, as she's still pretty new -- and she does have the heinous C Cupp on. I think Martin Bashir's show is excellent, and actually feel that it leans more towards news than the straight liberal commentary like the evening shows. However, there is no denying the total Republican tilt in the mornings. Remember under GWB when Joe used to claim was an Independent? Lot's of people disavowed their GOP affiliation during and after Bush. But now that Obama is in office, scab wears his affiliation proudly on his sleeve. Chuck Todd occasionally appears to be moderate, but remember where he came from. Then there is Andrea "Greenspan" Mitchell.
It is simple fact...there is no cable news network that offers us such a varied mix of Progressive/Liberal and Republican shows. None. And that is why I think MSNBC gets a bad rap. It would be better, perhaps, if they didn't segregate the two points of view based into day and evening, but I am sure they would lose substantial viewership that way. After all, liberals will watch Morning Joe even as they hate him, just to watch the trains wrecks, and to keep up on opposing views. No Republican would ever watch a minute of Rachel Maddow or The Ed Show.
.
lightcameron
(224 posts)Maybe when he was on Nightline, he did. But not now.
I don't watch TV in the mornings, but I don't doubt that JS's show doesn't lean left.
My point is, there's no way it's just a coincidence that righties gravitate towards FOX, liberals are drawn to MSNBC, and the hardcore of each base despises CNN.

As much as I like her overall, I find that she does a bad job when she's in attack mode, which she clearly is in the full interview. I mean, not just for this stuff, but for everything, especially the lead up to the iraq war. Just imagine....

I would even go so far as to say she follows in the footsteps of Edward R. Murrow and Eric Sevareid.

(1,950 posts)always frustrating and interisting that the r.s keep regurgitating the same old tired retreads like John Sununu. the r.s seem like 2nd time around may be a charm.

(9,865 posts)But the average American will not be able to understand what happened in this debate They will just see that "there are two sides to every argument"--and pick according to their pre-fabbed loyalties. They won't be able to actually critically analyze and see that one side is doing talking points and that Soledad is talking facts.
Flatpicker
(894 posts)I guess that's where I'm having the problem.
We can't even discuss these issues with the other side because we're not even accepting of the same facts.
How can you expect to work with people when you can't even agree on basics like water is wet and 2+2=4.
They are so lost in their own spin that they have divorced themselves from reality.

(19 posts)I haven't read every post in this thread, so I apologize if this has already been covered. But, the best part of the interview was Soledad's response to Sununu's repeatedly spouting the $717 Billion taken from Medicare by the ACA Republican talking point. Soledad said, almost verbatim, "That isn't true, and just because you keep repeating it doesn't make it true."
I LOVED it. And, I've been a huge fan of Soledad's for years. We need more "journalists" to call these clowns out when they spout utter bullshit (which is just about all of the time).
A good starting point would be to tell these assholes, EVERY time they refer to the "Democrat" party, that it's "Democratic" party. Nothing whips me into a frenzy more than that.

(1,418 posts)this proves just how desperate the GOP is-- dragging this tired, shrill old troll out from
under his rock to ape their talking points.
WTF is this guy? he's been out of MSM media for years, and now we're supposed to believe
he has any sort of credibility??
