TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas county clerk who moved the only polling site in the historic Wild West town of Dodge City to a facility outside the city limits more than a mile from the nearest bus stop says it is not possible to add a second polling site for the upcoming election.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree will hear arguments on a suit from the American Civil Liberties Union whether to force Ford County Clerk Deborah Cox to open another polling site in town for the midterm election.
The group says Cox refused for weeks to talk about improving the polling conditions prior to the lawsuit. During a telephone conference earlier this week, an ACLU lawyer told the judge that Cox forwarded one of their letters to the Kansas secretary of states office, with the notation LOL. Cox says the polling location had to be moved because of planned construction.
The ACLU noted that Cox moved the polling location just weeks before the election.
She then compounded any confusion that abrupt change likely caused by incorrectly informing hundreds of newly registered voters that they could vote at the original voting location, according to their court filing.

And as Rachel Maddow basically said last night on her show about this issue........................Cox is full of proverbial shit...........and is a lackey for one Kris Kobach.......................

(4,723 posts)Please. People vote in all sorts of different facilities. Personally, I have voted in schools, churches and the day room of a senior housing tower to name just a few. Currently, my polling place is in a conference room at a TENNIS COMPLEX. Don't try to tell me there isn't another place in that city to use as a polling place.

(17,604 posts)...I can see both sides. I live 10 miles from town and my one room school house polling place was still 5-6 miles away. So maybe they will pick up a few more voters 'out that way' if they dont have huge TRUMP signs still posted in their fields.

Ford County Republicans will convene at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Ford County Government Center, Dodge City, to nominate a new clerk. Gov. Sam Brownback will make the official appointment.
Their next election for the position looks like it will be in 2020. They need to find someone to run against her.

(1,533 posts)We have 12 polling places, why do they one have one? Assuming they have adequate equipment, why can't they divide by 4 or more and create multiple polling places? Does Cox believe that if everything isn't under her sole supervision that things might not happen her way?
I will be up at 5AM to get one of the 12 sites ready to greet voters. I have a training session tonight as a last minute refresher for head judges. I'm hoping people are taking advantage of early voting, because if the primary was any indication, we will be swamped with voters. My city is a part of what has kept Minnesota the most reliable blue vote for president for the last 50 years.

(1,533 posts)The average polling place in Kansas serves 1200 people, Dodge City's 13,000 voters are expected to crowd into one polling place. The residents need to sue to bring it inline with other sites in Kansas.
