...to people who regularly follow politics.

What this actually represents is Trump as a wedge in his party, dissuading conservatives like this fellow from openly supporting the WH. Not exactly 'pointless.'

Some of these candidate margins are razor-thin and these defections can have a limiting effect on the republican vote.
