I swear, Republicans can be some of the biggest crybabies I know.

Allow me to vent for a bit, because I need to get this off my chest.

My wife is mostly apolitical, but her entire family--both on her father and mother's side--are rabidly, rabidly Republican.

Yesterday I hear my mother-in-law ranting (which frequently happens) because my wife's uncle (her brother-in-law) was talking about closing his Florida based business if Andrew Gillum is elected governor. Just as a background, the uncle is from New York, runs a business here in Florida, and my father-in-law, who is a semi-retired former police officer with a pension, does work for him.

Basically, the uncle is threatening to close the Florida business and move it back to New York because of Gillum's proposal of a 40% increase on the corporate tax rate. Also my mother-in-law claims that Gillum's also going to levy an additional tax on pensions which she says will hurt my father-in-law.

Now, a couple of things here:

1. I have no clue what my mother-in-law is talking about with the pensions. There has been nothing, and I mean nothing, about Gillum levying a new tax on pensions. I chalk this one up to yet another example of my mother-in-law talking completely out of her ass, like the time she said the ACA would force everyone would pay hundreds of thousands of dollars if they sold their house. That's total Fox News induced watching bullshit.

2. About Gillium's 40% corporate tax increase proposal. Personally, I like it because corporations get away with absolute murder here in Florida. And with the money going to increasing teacher salaries and with my wife being a teacher, I would like that and in a normal thinking world, my mother-in-law would as well. The problem though in the end is as aspirational as it is, it's probably a bit of windmill tilting on Gillum's behalf. If he's elected, he will still almost certainly have a Republican legislature to deal with and whether they allow even a fraction of that increase to get passed is extremely unlikely.

3. About the uncle wanting to take his ball home to New York, I'm sure even if Gillum did get his 40% increase passed, it would likely still be less paying here in Florida than in New York. Decades of overly friendly corporate policies in Florida have created so many loopholes to be exploited here.

4. A few things about the uncle. He's rather wealthy and has been wealthy for a while. When President Obama was elected, I heard him freak out, joking he'd be better off living on the moon than being exposed to President Obama's policies. When Obama's term began, he owned a large house in an upscale Westchester County community and a vacation house on Cape Cod. When President Obama's term ended eight years later, he still owned his large Westchester house, had bought a much larger vacation house on Cape Cod, bought an oceanside condo in Florida, and had expanded his operations to Florida where he would fly to at will like it was nothing. So clearly he "suffered" tremendously under President Obama. And I'm sure he'll "suffer" just as much under Andrew Gillum.

These people are just so incredibly clueless, so incredibly greedy, and come off like whiny crybabies over nothing. I don't get it. I really, don't get this mindset other than it being the result of years of brainwashing.

Sorry, my blood is just boiling and I couldn't say anything for obvious reasons at the time, so you guys are my outlet.

you also deduct the first $50,000 of income as well.

a 40% increase would be to 7.7%

People see/hear a 40% increase and they think it's going from 5.5% to 45.5%

it's still a significant increase, but if the money is put towards increasing teacher salaries, it would really pay off well in the long run - better teachers attracted for the long term, and the short-term would give the state teachers more money to stimulate local economies.

income tax is moot. Property taxes are lower in South Carolina. They go there because with age comes weak circulation and difficulty staying warm. Florida is very warm compared to the norther regions.

they wanted to raise State income tax by 1 cents per dollar.

1/2 cent would go to Transportation projects and 1/2 cent to Education. The entire State freaked out and swept in Republican leaders* everywhere, dragging our State economy into the dumpster. All over 1 f'ing penny.

is a cesspool of corruption, greed and criminality, and that's the bailiwick of Republican politicians. It's time for change in Florida, and that change will never come voting for the same old Republicans.

Write 'em all down, and get an estimate for when the catastrophe is going to happen. Tomorrow? Six months? A year? Get them to initial it so everyone can be sure it's accurate. Then, at the appointed time, bring out the paper and ask them how that turned out (spoiler alert: nothing will have happened).

from the state of Florida. Never heard of any taxes going up on it. They contact us quarterly and I believe our pension would be safer under a democrat in office.

That’s the way it works. It’s an ‘increase’ is the reason why. The 40% is an increase on the existing taxes, not on what the company brings in. If the existing taxes are 5% then the increase is on that 5%.

I work at a clinic in a very small rural area of WI. I check in people for lab services. I like to have my tablet set up to watch the news in the morning and when a patient presents I pause it. A couple walked up to my desk and where my tablet paused was during a snip of a speech being given by Drumpf so he was frozen on the screen. The lady comment "Oh is that President Trump" to which I answered sarcastically yesss. She proceeded to inform me how she and her spouse endorsed him to which I replied "I'm Sorry" end of conversation. They reported me to my supervisor. The poor little flowers couldn't deal with me not loving their dear leader.
