Early voting by young people up 500% in Texas and Georgia

Early voting among young people in key US midterm battleground states has surged dramatically, the latest data shows, suggesting a potential jump in enthusiasm for Democratic candidates.

With six days to go until election day, Texas and Georgia, two traditionally Republican-leaning states, have increased their early vote rate among 18-29 year-olds by nearly five times or more compared to 2014.

...

In Pennsylvania, Nevada, Florida and Arizona – all traditional battleground states – young voting so far has at least doubled, and in the case of Pennsylvania, is up four-fold.

The four states have also all seen rises in the African-America vote, as well as Caucasian votes and the over 65s.

So all the youth-shaming is working!

Actually, I hope they're waking up to the danger and taking action.

With my generation it was the Vietnam War. No doubt far fewer of us would have become politically active without it.

This trend is very encouraging

I had brothers susceptible to the draft.

Trump will launch a new generation of politically active youth.

8. Be very cautious of people touting percentages without also including the hard numbers for support.

A 500% increase sounds impressive but that is simply going from 10000 to 60000, for instance.

If a second group only grows 100%, that could be mean it went from 10000 to 20000 or from 60000 to 120000. Without hard numbers to put those percentages into context, there is not much you can glean about the overall picture.

11. Senior turnout is always significantly higher than youth turnout as you know.

It takes a smaller percentage increase in senior turnout to offset a massive increase in youth turnout. Always look past the flashy headlines for the evidence and comparisons.
