https://www.vox.com/2018/11/1/18053638/cnn-carried-donald-trump-immigration-white-housePresident Donald Trump got cable news to carry him live and uninterrupted for nearly half an hour from the West Wing Thursday, where he gave what amounted to a fear-mongering stump speech in the final days before the midterm elections.
During his rambling presentation, and in questions with reporters, Trump made many factually incorrect claims about immigrants, immigration policy and crime including claims that asylum seekers never show up in court (two-thirds do), that Barack Obama had a harsher family separation policy than him (Trumps was much harsher) and that hes getting billions for his wall (hes gotten none).
He announced no new policy changes, despite a policy announcement being the premise that got cable networks to carry the speech live. But he did offer up claims ranging from ridiculous to racist:
As Trump prepares to send more troops to the border, he said that asylum seekers who throw rocks should know we will consider that a firearm. Because theres not much difference.
He insinuated that theres a lot of money moving around in the immigrant caravan, a reference to conspiracy theories about George Soross secret involvement.
He said American women should fear men coming across the border, a near-verbatim use of the racist trope that men of color are a sexual threat to white women.
He claimed there are immigrants who come to America with big medical problems before they get here.
In response to a question about a Georgia governors race, he volunteered that Stacey Abrams, a Yale-educated black woman with years in public service, is not qualified to serve.

(17,862 posts)It is journalistic malfeasance to not push back on such a statement. Even call it what it is, a dog whistle. The reporter could have at least asked why she wasn't qualified.

(10,721 posts)But I don't expect any changes, at least not until Democrats change the narrative about the media. Republicans have beaten the "liberal media" drum for several decades, and that has paid dividends. Many members of the media go out of their way to not seem biased toward reality, which just so happens to favor Democrats. The false equivalencies, treating all statements as equally valid opinions (no lies, no truths; only opinions), the fluff stories, the horse race coverage...it's all so infuriating. I quit TV many years ago, but I have recently been watching evening MSNBC programs online.
I wish the DNC would hire someone such as Fugelsang to give a daily press conference for the sole purpose of addressing all of Trump's lies over the previous 24 hours. The only way to take control of the narrative is to do something unprecedented and provocative.

(664 posts)Quincy Jones years ago? He must have bitten his nails down to the quick with worry about Daddy's little girl dating one of THOSE people.
I wonder if Quincy Jones spoiled the well for good, old Donald?

Please replay the tapes of his "Grab them by the pussy" comments every time he brings up this ridiculous concept.
It should be done every time he opens his mouth.

(17,862 posts)She was the minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2011 to 2017. That is one of the most important positions at the state level.
Why the hell don't reporters push back.
