The Hotel Bill for Melania Trump's One-Day Cairo Visit Was $95,000

The United States Department of State paid a hotel in Cairo nearly a $100,000 for a single day of services during Melania Trump’s trip to Egypt, part of her tour of the African continent, according to a government spending report. According to Quartz, the Semiramis Intercontinental Cairo received $95,050 for “FLOTUS Visit Hotel Rooms” on September 30 from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

The hotel features fine dining and “stunning views of the sunset over the Nile” with rooms starting at just $164 per night, and the presidential suite going for $699 per night. But according to a spokesperson for the First Lady, Melania only spent six hours in Cairo, and didn’t spend the night at the Intercontinental.

There’s no itemized breakdown of the spending, but it’s difficult to imagine spending that kind of money in a fourth of a day.

How much fine dining does it take get into the five-digit range? Is Melania’s security personnel very very hungry? The Intercontinental offers free Wi-Fi, so it’s not like that was added to the overall price. This administration has established themselves as erratic spenders and weird hotel guests, so there’s really no telling how the money was actually spent.

Sounds like some padding going on there.

And what about the rest of the trip?

That's just one day.

Not the expenditure, mind you, but rather that this information was published by journalists after the State Department released it.

From the Huffington Post:

The first lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, was furious that the initial report — later picked up by The Hill — said Melania Trump spent the night at the Semiramis Intercontinental Cairo. In fact, she spent only six hours there, Grisham told both Quartz and The Hill in angry Twitter posts.

Grisham complained that, “sadly, the damage from this false reporting is done,” referring to The Hill — as if the fact that it cost taxpayers $95,000 for a mere six-hour visit instead of for an overnight stay was somehow more understandable. Grisham also called the Quartz report “irresponsible journalism.”

My favorite comment to that story: "Renting hotel rooms by the hour is nothing new for (Melanoma)."

and, what, he's gone golfing about 160 times so far. So Melania's frittering about is chump change, in terms of screwing over US taxpayers with gourmet boondoggles for the rich.

The republicans are systematically squandering our hard-earned tax dollars to pamper a draft-dodging "billionaire." That totally sucks.
