Military troops reach positions at San Diego County's U.S.-Mexico border entry

Active-duty troops are now stationed at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in southern San Diego County, CA, the Department of Defense said Friday, marking the start of a military response to the U.S.-Mexico border amid immigration concerns.

The mix of forces includes military police, an assault helicopter battalion, various communications, medical and headquarters units, combat engineers, planners and public affairs units. Most of the troops are being used to facilitate the movement of border patrol agents, house them, feed them and provide some of their protection.

Many of the troops will be armed. Military police at the border will carry weapons, although they will have non-lethal options for dealing with unexpected conflict. Pentagon officials say they are planning for a worst-case scenario of violence that could force soldiers to rely on their training to make split-second decisions to defend themselves or civilians. MPs might, for example, be dispatched to provide armed security for military engineers placing barricades at locations where there are no border patrol agents to provide protection.

Lt. Col. Jamie Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said the military will not disclose details of its rules on the use of force.

Armed troops will be stationed on the Border through the 2020 campaign. Bank on it. We haven't seen peak immigrant hysteria. Trump will escalate and escalate until Mexicans start chucking rocks out of spite.

There will be blood.

ALL the DHS money and ICE hasn't gotten basic logistical support, and stuff like communications???? Remember folks...they took away antennae tv bc they were going to need the band width for all things safety/military, but apparently that hasn't translated to use yet. NO MORE FREE TV THOUGH. Even shoveling adverts down our throats 24/7.
They need the military for Public Affairs? You gotta be shitting me tiffany cufflinks. Posse Commitatus is ALL i heard during Obamas Admin ANY time the military was discussed to be used for Hurricanes A-Z. But now, bc of the election, don ivan deploys troops in America for some horseshit reason. And they are doing just what we needed during every disaster from Hurricane Gustav/Ike-Hurricanes in 2016. GD it. Rules only apply to poor people and democrats. More troops than Afghanistan...right here in River City. This sounds like a new war w all the falderall.
No need for college...just might as well have your kids enlist or apply to ICE. Such a GD mess.
What happened to the Pentagon saying NO???

Yeah, Trump is an evil asshole for doing this...had to say that first.

But know that free over the air TV is available and better than ever. I realize this is OT for this thread, but I hate to think you could be paying for something you don't need to. I watch it all the time, and it's crystal clear. If you have a modern TV, you don't need a converter box.

The signal requires a digital tuner, which any TV made after 2007 has already built in. Older TVs will need a converter box.

As a head's up, most of the signals went to UHF frequencies, so you might want a better antenna design since the rabbit ears worked better in VHF frequencies.

And when you do pull in those signals - it's beautiful! They come in at 1080i HD.

Just for the record. They screwed w the tvs under the aegis that they needed the bandwidth. If thats the case, why didnt the military and police etc just use the digital antennaes and we just kept what we had? You know exactly what Im saying. The point above was the military , this thread is an off shoot of a fine point to mince words.

Fri Nov 2, 2018, 09:29 PM
Nov 2018

All that changed was the format of the data on the frequencies. Old TV used a combo of AM and FM over a 6 MHz spread to transmit TV via a continuously variable signal. A digital broadcast converts the programming into a stream of binary on/off bits—sequences of 0s and 1s. The TV tuner has to be able to convert that to a picture and sound. The lower channels that bracketed FM radio are getting moved to the higher UHF frequencies and the design for UHF is different than VHF. Also, because the signal is now digital, the channel can be virtually assigned, so for instance PBS channel 59 in Norwich, CT actually broadcasts on VHF frequency channel 9.

VHF-Lo Channels 2-6 54MHz -88MHz
FM Radio 88MHz-108MHz
108MHz-174MHz is a mish mash of stuff
VHF Hi Channels 7-13 174MHz - 216MHz

UHF Channels 14-69 now confined to 470MHz - 698MHz (channels 52-83 were taken for broadband, a future effort is underway to take channels 39-51)

TV used very wide swaths of valuable radio frequencies because it came about in a time where there was limited use of radio. Now with wireless devices everywhere like routers and cordless phones, there was a need for that space and TV was not using much of in any one market.

Digital allowed it to be compacted into a smaller chunk of the spectrum and have the stations still appear on the same channel of your TV. Meanwhile, the old channel 52-53 is the backbone now of the 4G data on most cell phone networks.

Pulse rotary phones used to work well too, but eventually the telephone systems were switched to Touch-Tone. If you want a Western Electric 554 to work now you have to put a dial tone converter into it. (and on VOIP, you have to add a capacitor to provide the juice to ring the phone)

And yeah, if you've got the old kind with the built in rabbit ears, you might be screwed, unless you know how to rig it. You might be able to connect the output on the converter to the antenna with tape, solder, etc.

Any TV you bought after that is capable of receiving digital signals over the air, today. I do not pay for cable, and get TV over the air on a modern flatscreen. Rabbit ears, even ones sold before 2009, will work, because the digital signals still travel on VHF and UHF. You'll get better results with a real antenna mounted in your attic or rooftop, and even better with a signal booster. But this was true before the digital transition as well.

when it is not. The underlying message that one would and should always have taken away from that training is, "if you ever have to use deadly force while in uniform" you'd better have followed all lawful procedures up to and prior to doing so." And deadly force simply means firing your weapon. It doesn't matter even if you just wounded someone, there will be an investigation, and your career could be over, if you failed to follow procedures. Also, you learn that you don't have to follow an unlawful order. So that means, if your president tells you to shoot a child or his parent for trespassing, when they are not a threat to you, you can be severely disciplined i.e. military confinement (jailed), forfeiture of pay, sentenced to hard labor, and/or receive a dishonorable discharge; so Trump is the last person I'd be looking to for guidance for how to conduct oneself in a border skirmish.

I am not particularly concerned about our military shooting unarmed civilians. That's not what a member of the most professional and best trained military in the history of the world would do.

That being said, it pisses me off no end that the military is being used in such a blatantly political way. I also think the Orange Abomination is violating the Posse Comitatus Act - a high crime.

Best equipped and financed...maybe...

I appreciate what you are saying though.

I have faith that the overwhelming majority of those in leadership positions within our armed forces will not hesitate to defy unlawful orders.
