MIDDLETON, Idaho -- The superintendent of the Middleton School District apologized Friday after at least a dozen teachers dressed up as pieces of a border wall and Mexican stereotypes for Halloween.
The teachers at Heights Elementary dressed as the "wall" posed behind large cardboard pieces painted to look like bricks, with "Make America Great Again" spelled out in red-white-and-blue letters. Others donned brightly colored ponchos and sombreros, or mariachi garb. One woman posing in the picture appears to have written MEXICAN in capital letters across the brim of her sombrero.
The photos were posted to the Middleton School District's Facebook page. They were later deleted, but screenshots of the costumes began to circulate, drawing condemnation from people in the district and beyond.
Dr. Josh Middleton, the district's superintendent, said in a video posted to the same Facebook page Friday morning that he wanted to "express my sincerest and deepest apologies" for the costumes.

(38,958 posts)going off the deep end and thinking this was a good idea, (they would be wrong, but I figure there are enough stupid ideas floating around that it's bound to happen) but, 6?
These are supposedly well educated folks who are teaching in this or other schools, how in the devil did they get this far in life and draw the conclusion that these costumers were not offensive?
The article said a dozen teachers.
That's a LOT of shitty judgment.

They knew what they were doing, they just didn't think people would really care too much. The "Melania Effect."

(806 posts)disruption to their students? My elementary school had 22 teachers (3 teachers each for grades 1 through 6, 2 Kindergarten teachers, a music teacher, and a gym teacher) - if this school is similar, we're talking about firing over half the faculty! Obviously, there has to be some serious cultural/institutional issues at this elementary school that probably over half the faculty thought this was a good idea.

(90,758 posts)So creating a disruption is not a concern for the school or school district - obviously.
Of course there are institutional issues at the school. More than apparent from the article.

(50,530 posts)Check this shit out: Middleton built a new high school in the 1960s. At the time, state law required new public buildings to have sprinklers but the state assumed people would know sprinklers needed to have pipes running to them so they didnt write into law they had to work. To save money for gym equipment, the Middleton HS designers installed the sprinklers but didnt plumb them in...so, when a fan overheated in the gym, the school burned to the ground.
And in case youre wondering, dairy farming is the industry around Middleton. That school is packed with Hispanic students, who I am certain were just thrilled to see their teachers pulling this shit.
