New York police investigate antisemitic graffiti inside Brooklyn synagogue

Police said Friday they are investigating antisemitic vandalism inside a New York synagogue, less than a week after the deadliest attack on American Jews and amid a rash of other antisemitic incidents.

The discovery of antisemitic graffiti inside Union Temple, in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, prompted the cancelation of a political event hosted by Broad City’s Ilana Glazer, according to CBS.

Police received a call at about 8pm on Thursday reporting “antisemitic graffiti written in black marker” at the congregation.

Nobody has been arrested in relation to the vandalism, which is being investigated by the NYPD’s hate crimes taskforce.

Critics of Donald Trump have said that his bombastic rhetoric against minorities and immigrants has fanned the flames of antisemitism in the US as has his repetition of the conspiracy theory that Jewish-Hungarian financier George Soros has paid anti-Trump protesters to demonstrate and is funding US-bound migrant caravans from Central America.

1. I am especially sickened

that the vandalism was done by an African-American. It tells me that we have succumbed to a low level of intolerance that needs to be snuffed out and fought vigorously.

I am overwhelmed by the hate that is being aimed at the Jewish community right now. I get the feeling that you're "used to it" since you've been fighting it for centuries, but that doesn't make it any less painful.

So. As a gentile, what can I do?

I have a thought. A lot of white people are talking about white privilege and trying to educate people about it. You don't have to be racist to benefit from institutional racism. and there's an effort to get people to see that.

I think if people knew what anti-Semitism looks like, they might try to change. I know that I'm looking at myself and trying to make some changes, but anti-Semitism is such a big part of the black community that its hard to recognize what is anti-Semitism and what is true history. The relationship between blacks and Jews for the last 100 years has been complicated, and has caused a lot of ill will. But I didn't know that it had become violent.

So, again. as a non-Jew, what can I do? Can you tell me what "left wing anti-Semitism" looks like so I can help people see it in themselves and let go of it?

You have no idea how painful it has been to confront people about Farrakhan. I am getting vehement pushback.

I don't know if I went too far. I said that Farrakhan incites violence. I wish I had proof. Specific incidents in which it was clear that Farrakhan's message created a violent response. Maybe it is true that he creates ill will but not violence.

If you can address this, it would really help.

4. They caught

the man who did this. He was a mentally disturbed 26 year African American man old who was in and out of foster services, went to Brandeis, and is now in a mental health facility. I hope that he gets the mental health he needs and learns why his actions were so devastating.

This was shocking to our community. I live in the same neighborhood as UT, and have friends whose kids when to pre-k there. I used to work out at the gym housed in the building. I know people who attend services there.

This is NOT the only temple that has been vandalized in the last week (though it has gotten way more press than others). a slew of Lubavitcher and Orthodox temples in Crown Heights and South Williamsburg have also been hit. So it certainly feels like there is more open aggression to the Jewish Community in NYC right now. Especially in BK.
