North Dakota Tribes **Rockin The Vote!** In Other States Too! Donations needed...

For those that dont know how North Dakota has attempted to suppress Native American votes and WHY they're doing it:

One of the groups who works to protect and enable Native American votes, Fourdirections are working their butts off, to get all the various tribes' members the ability to vote and to get them to the polls. Some details are here in their twitter feed.

Fourdirections are providing FREE ID's to members who have residential addresses, but have only their old PO box ID's. They've implemented the idea, to create reservation addresses, and assign them on the spot, now, and at the polls, to the many members who dont have one. In addition, they are mobilizing and will transport all eligible voters who need rides to the polls.

We need ND senator Heitkamp to keep this seat, and she needs the tribal vote to win. Her seat is crucial, even if we dont win the senate this election, as it could help us win a majority in 2020.

AND Fourdirections are also helping to physically get tribal voters to the polls in other states, like Arizona. Our senate candidate has a very slim lead in Arizona, so every vote is crucial.

They need donations to keep their efforts going. Gas for rides to polling places, meals for volunteers, supplies for ID cards & letters, etc.

I live in the next state over, we have our voting problems on reservations too but not that bad. My Indian friends matter to me and I wanted to do something, this gave me a way to help in a small way but offer help none the less. Been spreading the word about this campaign. I was able to donate $25 bucks so I feel like I was able to buy a couple gallons of gas or something.

and $10 there, accross the country. Thanks for spreading the word! I wonder if Rachel will have OJ Semans, from Four Directions, on her show tonight, for an update? She had him on last week. Regardless, there is an excellent chance that, with with the money they are raising, they will be a force in this election, and in 2020 as well. There is a great Time magazine article on them from a couple of days ago. I will find and post the link.

inside my head, at the horrendous attrocities committed against Native Americans. I used to fantazize that I could somehow avenge them. Then I grew up, got busy, and never pursued it. Now, in this limited exercise, I hope I can motivate others to stand up, and say, HELL YES! WE CARE and THANK-YOU! Go get 'em!

excepting some groups regarding the last 5 centuries here on this continent, have no idea what their ancestors went through. Horrendous atrocities were common to the human condition for many hundreds of thousands of years.

But now they're uncommon over most of the planet and deplored everywhere.

Many reasons contribute to that stupendous, magnificent advance (including far greater amounts of energy availability leading to tremendous advances in wellbeing), but the development of humanism, the idea that individual people have value and rights, is perhaps the greatest.

In the west, belief in the rights of man developed and became dominant with the Age of Reason/Enlightenment and was intrinsic to the development and principles of western liberal democracies.

We do advance, even if not all believe and perhaps a third of humanity always has to be dragged along kicking and screaming.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Declaration of Independence

Are you a Winston Churchill fan? What do you think of this excert from a 1941 speech:

“Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

In order to follow this advice, should we now take action? Thoughts?

Absolutely! After all, going and voting is how citizens of democracies stand and fight for their convictions.

I do love that quote for those people in the middle of a devastating war, Onward. Churchill was, of course, trying to strengthen backbones in terrifying times and to fire up the conviction needed to fight as one against the enemy. He was also a conservative leader who understand that coming together in honor and good sense was necessary for victory. Imagine! He was also a progressive conservative.

Goodness knows we desperately need more of all that, but how would Churchill fare on Twitter and Facebook today, reach people who refused to watch anything but Fox? Whatever happens Tuesday, the right's authoritarian coalition will be just as determined to defeat us Wednesday, and just as vicious and immoral in tactics. We no longer all gather around our radios each night as a giant captive audience, but somehow more of us need to become stronger in our convictions and principles.

A growing right-wing extremism that is incompatible with the functioning of representative democracies threatens to destroy ours. To win, we must rebuild the bipartisan mainstream majority that for over 70 years held stable against extremism from both sides.

Then, you need to kick and rec to the top every DU story you see about voter suppression shenanigans and post O&A's link for donations because this is the most urgent thing that is going down as the clock is running out. And while you're at it, kick it out to the Twittersphere and FB too.

Semans and his wife, Barb — both enrolled members of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota — have been visiting the Standing Rock, Spirit Lake and Turtle Mountain reservations in North Dakota to set up phone banks, prepare maps and coordinate with tribal leaders who are scrambling to print identification cards and assign street addresses to residents who have never had one. On Tuesday, they will join more than 100 people in Turtle Mountain, knocking on doors and driving people to and from the polls to vote, aiming to turn out 3,000 people on the reservation.

“You can only push somebody so far before they have to start pushing back,” says Semans, the co-executive director of Four Directions, a group that promotes voting access for Native Americans and is currently organizing on the ground in Arizona, Nevada, Utah and North Dakota, employing upwards of 800 people for get-out-the-vote efforts on Election Day. “We are going to warrior up. We are going to go to the polls, and we are going to make sure North Dakota and every other state that natives are in are aware we are here.”
